The AI performed well elsewhere. What should we check before using it here in the GCC?

Dmitry Sergeev joins Dr Paul Setlak to explore why the patient population and clinical setting belong in the conversation about AI in oncology.

🇦🇪 The UAE is adjusting its Ebola precautions as the evidence changes.

Ebola-related entry measures introduced for Ugandan nationals are being eased after Uganda completed the internationally recognised monitoring period without further detected transmission linked to its last imported patient.

But an important distinction:

⚠️ This is not an all-clear on the regional outbreak.

UAE precautions affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan remain, and wider surveillance continues.

For me, this is what risk-based preparedness should look like:

🟢 ease measures when evidence supports it
🔴 maintain them where risk remains
🔍 continue surveillance throughout

The next challenge is operational—making sure airlines, border teams, employers and healthcare providers are all working from the same current risk assessment.

23:00. Evening. The capacity reports do not agree. A family still needs treatment tomorrow.

What would you do first?

Dr Paul Setlak takes you through an imagined healthcare disruption in the Middle East in this Health Majlis episode.

Who can act when the usual lead is unavailable? Are those twelve beds ready for patients? Has demand really fallen, or has the reporting feed stopped? Who takes over when the first team needs rest?

Paul shares how he thinks through the decisions, drawing on his experience across trauma care, public health, emergency response, operations, command and control, and AI-driven insights.

A patient’s experience starts before the consultation and continues after discharge.

That whole journey is at the heart of Health Majlis Episode 7.

Khaled Ahmed, Group Chief Financial Officer of Saudi German Hospital UAE, joins Dr Paul Setlak to explore healthcare growth, continuity of care, and the decisions that protect quality and patient trust.

From financial planning and clinical services to communication and follow-up, how do we keep the person receiving care in view?

🇦🇪 A genetic result is not the same as a clear clinical answer.

Abu Dhabi is requiring genetics training for family-medicine specialists and consultants as Emirati Genome Programme participants begin receiving preliminary individual results.

The focus is practical: reviewing results, interpreting their significance, explaining them to patients and arranging appropriate clinical follow-up.

The initial requirement is for those specified physicians—not every clinician. The circular leaves the training timetable and detailed arrangements to subsequent communication.

For me, the real test is not whether someone completes a course.

It is whether they can explain uncertainty, recognise what is actionable and know when to refer—without treating every genomic finding as a diagnosis.

That is the focus of this Majlis Minute.

You love the sport here in the UAE and broader GCC. Can you keep training for life? Episode 6 of Health Majlis goes Beyond the Mat with Bono, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) black belt, and host Dr Paul Setlak.
They are friends. They both practise BJJ.
This conversation is about what surrounds the rounds: fitness, recovery, ego, community, longevity and the questions to ask before buying supplements.
Jiu-jitsu has a special place in the UAE, including school pathways supported by UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation. Across the GCC, exercise and active living are part of a wider conversation about health—not just sporting results.
What helps a beginner feel welcome and keep coming back?

🇦🇪 Access to a medicine is only the beginning. Can the decision withstand an audit?

Abu Dhabi’s revised exceptional-use medical-product standard requires more than an approval letter.

For products within its scope, facilities need prior DoH approval, supporting clinical evidence, assessment of registered alternatives and local stock, and continuing oversight.

That includes reviews at least every six months and a transition to an available registered product, subject to any authorised grace period.

Important: this standard has applied since July 2026. It is not a new product approval or reimbursement route—and it does not remove applicable Emirates Drug Establishment requirements.

In this Majlis Minute, I explore why the clinical justification, safety monitoring and transition plan need to work as one connected pathway.

Save this for your next pharmacy-governance discussion.

What will research change for patients in the UAE? 🇦🇪

That’s the question I’m bringing to today’s 9th Annual Mediclinic Middle East Research Conference at MBRU in Dubai.

On the programme: real-world cancer research, UAE genomics and the readiness to use AI in clinical practice.

My interest is in what happens next:

→ Evidence that reflects the people we care for.
→ Findings that help clinicians make decisions.
→ Outcomes that matter in patients’ everyday lives.

This connection between research and practical healthcare decisions is central to our work at Al-Ghaf Dynamics.

Thank you Mediclinic Middle East for bringing the research community together at MBRU .

🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia is building the people behind its RWE ambitions.

The SFDA and King Saud University held a scientific meeting for their Real-World Evidence Fellowship, including:
✅ a workshop on implementation challenges
✅ research-project presentations
✅ recognition of graduates

This is an encouraging signal for Saudi capability building in:

* real-world data
* drug-safety research
* evidence that can support scientific and regulatory decisions

For me, the next question is whether these graduates now move into roles across regulators, providers, academia, CROs and industry that can actually produce decision-grade Saudi evidence.

PISODE 5 | BUILDING PHARMA SECURITY AND CAPACITY
A pharmaceutical factory is only the beginning.
In Episode 5 of Health Majlis, Dr Paul Setlak speaks with Dr Waseem Hamad, Chief Executive Officer of Philex Pharmaceuticals about what it takes to turn regional manufacturing capacity into trusted quality, dependable supply and better patient access.
The conversation explores:
• What pharmaceutical security means in practical, measurable terms
• When localisation improves resilience—and when it simply shifts dependencies
• Why capacity must be supported by quality, demand visibility and skilled talent
• Where GCC countries should collaborate rather than duplicate capability
• How technology transfer and regional partnerships could strengthen access across the GCC and Africa
The central idea is simple: capacity creates potential. Pharmaceutical security is built when quality, supply resilience, talent and patient access work together.
Watch Episode 5 through the link in bio.
Which capability should the GCC prioritise next: essential medicines, APIs, vaccines, advanced therapies or regional specialisation?
