Independent Support Worker or Small NDIS Registered Provider — What's the Difference?
When choosing NDIS supports, you may come across both independent support workers and registered NDIS providers.
So what's the difference?
Both can provide wonderful, person-centred support. The right choice will depend on the participant, their plan, their preferences and the type of support they need.
🌿 Independent Support Worker
An independent support worker generally works directly with the participant or their family.
This can offer:
• A very personal, one-to-one relationship
• Flexibility and direct communication
• The opportunity to choose someone who is a great personality fit
• Less organisational structure between the participant and their support worker
For some people, this is exactly what they want.
💙 Small NDIS Registered Provider
A small registered provider can offer that same personal, relationship-based approach, while also providing the structure of an organisation behind the support.
Depending on the provider and the supports being delivered, this may include:
• Worker screening and onboarding processes
• Policies and procedures around safety, privacy and quality
• Organisational oversight and accountability
• Support with coordinating services
• Processes for managing incidents, complaints and feedback
• Access to more than one worker when required
• Continuity and backup when a regular worker is unavailable
• The ability to grow or change supports as a participant's needs change
And being a small provider doesn't have to mean becoming impersonal.
In fact, we believe there can be something really valuable about having the best of both worlds.
A small organisation where participants can still know the people behind the business, build genuine relationships with their support workers and have their individual preferences understood — while also having the systems and support of a registered provider behind them.
At Cobber Care, we don't want participants to feel like a number on a roster.
We want to know the person.
What they enjoy.
What matters to them.
What they're working towards.
Who they feel comfortable with.
And what makes a good day for them.
Because good support isn't just about having someone turn up.
It's about having the right person, the right support and the right relationship. 💙
Your mate at every step.
