We're off to Anaheim this week for the American Academy of Optometry Annual Meeting, where thousands of optometrists gather to shape the future of eye care.

And so we're highlighting the important work they do: Optometrists catch what you can't. Glaucoma and AMD both progress silently, often for years, before you'd ever notice. A routine eye exam can spot both, early enough to protect your sight.

Thank you to the optometrists doing this work every day. 💙

Glaucoma is called the "silent thief of sight" for good reason. It's usually painless and it affects your side (peripheral) vision first . By the time you notice something's wrong, damage may already done.

But there's one thing that can warn you early: your DNA.

SightScore™ is a genetic risk test that reads your DNA to reveal your personal risk of developing glaucoma before symptoms appear. Armed with that information, you and your eye care provider can build a screening plan tailored to you.

Because when it comes to your sight, waiting for a warning is waiting too long.

"Isn't my family history the same as my genetic risk?"

While family history is a clue, but it's not the whole story. You can have a family history of glaucoma and not carry a high personal genetic risk, because you may not have inherited the specific variants that raise it. You can also have no family history and still carry a high genetic risk.

That's why SightScore™ looks at YOUR own DNA, not your family tree. Because your risk is personal to you. Knowing your genetic risk means you and your eye care provider can build a screening plan tailored to you, not a one-size-fits-all approach based on relatives alone.

👉 If you're ready to understand your personal risk, talk to your eye care provider about SightScore™ today.

Have you heard of AMD? It affects around 1 in 7 people aged over 50 years. Age and family history are the strongest risk factors, so it's important to share information about your eye health with your relatives. Book an eye check today and talk to your provider about SightScore AMD testing to learn your genetic risk for AMD.

Some people have questions about how SightScore glaucoma polygenic risk score testing can support their glaucoma care and when to start testing. Here, we describe some of the more common reasons people have SightScore testing and how it can impact their glaucoma care. The most important thing for your glaucoma care is to have regular appointments with your eye care provider. Talk to them today about whether SightScore might support your glaucoma screening and management.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible vision loss worldwide. About 1 in 200 people have glaucoma by age 40, increasing to 1 in 8 by age 80.

The difficult part? Most won't know until vision is already affected. No pain, no obvious warning signs in the early stages.

That's why understanding your personal genetic risk matters. SightScore™ Glaucoma uses millions of genetic variants to estimate your individual risk, helping you and your eye doctor plan proactive care.

You can't change your genes. But you can change what you do with that knowledge. 💙

Today is International Deafblind Awareness Day!

Last year, the UN appointed 27th June Deafblind Awareness Day, in honour of Hellen Keller, who was born on this day in 1880. Hellen Keller was on the forefront of deafblind advocacy, and was a living example of how much people who are deafblind are capable of when we invest in accessibility and giving people the right tools.

Today we would like to take a moment to highlight the importance of Braille. The written word is invaluable. Audiobooks and screen readers are wonderful tools, but not everyone is able to hear them. Even if you can hear, Braille allows you to read in noisy environments, like a menu in a busy restaurant, or find out information without disrupting the people around you, like reading the numbers in a lift to find the right floor. Braille also allows you to check your spelling where a screen reader might stumble.

At Blind Low Vision NZ we are committed to the ongoing promotion of Braille. We give our members Braille lessons, convert texts into Braille, and provide Braille paper to our members for their own use.

[Image description] A close-up shows fingertips gently moving across a sheet of Braille. In the top left corner, a bright yellow box contains bold black text that reads: “Happy World Deafblind Awareness Day!” Small orange decorative lines surround the box.

So, you've got your results. Now what? 👀

Getting your glaucoma risk result is one thing. Deciding whether to tell your kids, siblings, or parents is another. 💬

Here's why it matters: 1 in 4 first-degree relatives of someone with glaucoma will develop the condition during their lifetime. Sharing what you've learned could be one of the most important eye health conversations your family ever has.

It doesn't have to be a big conversation. It can be as simple as:

"I just found out more about my glaucoma risk. It might be worth getting your eyes checked too."

A simple conversation today could help protect your loved ones' sight tomorrow. 💙

Step 4: Talk to your provider about your results & start planning your personalised management.
That's it. A saliva swab and a few weeks. Get a better understanding of your glaucoma and AMD risk to support your screening & management.

We've been getting some great questions about SightScore™ AMD since we launched it earlier this year. Here are four of the most common. 💙

Q1: Is AMD the same as losing your whole sight?
Q2: If my mum has AMD, do I definitely have a high risk?
Q3: Is there anything I can do if I have a high AMD risk score?
Q4: How is SightScore™ AMD different from a regular eye exam?
