For more than 20 years, Japanese immunologist Dr. Qing Li has studied how spending time in forests affects the human body. His research found that time spent among trees can increase the activity of natural killer (NK) cells, immune cells that help the body fight virus-infected and cancerous cells. Some studies reported increases of around 50% following forest bathing.

One possible explanation is phytoncides, natural compounds released by trees to protect themselves from insects and microorganisms. Research suggests that breathing in these compounds may influence immune activity.

Li also found that forest walks were associated with lower cortisol levels, blood pressure and heart rates compared with walks in urban environments, suggesting that spending time in nature can help reduce stress.

The benefits appear to come from a combination of factors, including the forest's natural chemistry and the calming effects of nature on the nervous system.

Nature is a valuable complement to a healthy lifestyle. Spending time among trees may support several biological processes involved in stress regulation and immune function.

Today, people spend much of their lives indoors, often limiting their exposure to natural environments. Making time to walk among trees may be a simple way to reconnect with nature and support overall well-being.

Our Letters To Trees event happened today at Himeji Gardens in the Adelaide Parklands.

A wonderful group of people gathered to connect with place and space while prompted with writing cues to help creativity, eco anxiety and expression.

Some great poems, prose and stories shared and a common theme of wanting to protect our trees and parkland spaces.

A fabulous free community event for Nature Festival this year!!

Thank you to Brian, Rose, Lisabel, Stacey, Gaynor, Zoe and Catherine for joining us 🙏

If you look hard enough you will see school students getting to know a giant tree a little better 😉

I’m impressed by the thoughtful, caring and intelligent young people I’m meeting and sharing nature with as a Nature Therapy Guide.

We would love to see more students participate in a facilitated slow down experience for the benefits of mental and physical health not just through Outdoor Education but more widely for emotional regulation and reset.

Connect = Care (for earth and self!!)

Win win!!

Thank you Immanuel College for the opportunity 🙏

School enquiries welcome 🙏

A chilly and windy evening by the coast here in Adelaide didn’t stop our SoundWalkers from enjoying beautiful moments of shared silence and a deliberate opportunity for deeper listening of our living earth.

The ocean, rustling clothing, birdsong and air rushing past our ears…

Thanks to all for joining us 🙏

A global collaboration between the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT) and Quiet Parks International 💚
