Why do some scans need contrast while others don’t?
Contrast is used in certain imaging examinations to help make particular structures or processes more visible. Depending on the type of scan and the clinical question, it can help doctors assess areas such as blood vessels, internal organs, inflammation, infection and some tumours more clearly.
But contrast isn’t automatically “better”, and not every examination needs it. In many cases, a scan without contrast can provide the information your doctor needs.
When contrast is being considered, factors such as the type of examination, your symptoms, medical history, kidney function and any previous reactions may be taken into account.
At Baulkham Hills Radiology, each examination is performed according to the clinical information required, with our team guiding you through the process when contrast is needed.
The right scan is about getting the right information for your individual clinical situation.
