It’s finally here. Charlene’s amazing successful VBAC story.

Charlene’s first labour was traumatic, 40hours, an epidural that failed and an emergency c-section. This time she wanted things different and boy did she put in the work! She spent her entire pregnancy preparing mentally, physically and emotionally to ensure this labour would be different. When we found eachother at 35 weeks pregnant, I knew she was in great shape to achieve the birth she wanted.

Attempting a VBAC in a hospital setting comes with its challenges especially with hospital policies however Charlene and her husband Johnny did an amazing job of holding their own and standing their ground to ensure she received the low-intervention birth they prayed for.

While this labour was 23 hours of pure endurance and strength, it was the most rewarding, redemptive experience she said she’d ever had.

I feel extremely honored and blessed to have been apart of their journey and support Charlene to achieve her goal 💗👏🙏 and the handwritten letter she wrote me literally moved me to tears 🥹
This is more than just a job, it’s a calling, a blessing and so fulfilling to support women birth their babies 🥰

MOST USED FROM MY LABOUR TOOLKIT💪

Call me Mary Poppins because my bag has got everything you can think of that could be useful in birth, but here are some of the most used items!

For ambience in the room: tea light candles, galaxy light with inbuilt speaker for music

For labour comfort measures: rebozo, TENS ElleTENS, acupressure balls by Earthside | mother. | Birth & Motherhood, heat pack with straps

For general comfort: lip balm, clary sage essential oil, bendy straws for easy sipping & hydration, an eye mask to black out the world around you & help you focus, a handheld fan (when transition into pushing is all consuming, sometimes a bit of direct air flow can help you feel like you can breathe)

There are plenty of other goodies I carry in my toolkit, eg affirmation cards (made specifically & personalised for each client), combs, birth rope but these pictured items are by far the most used!

DM me if you’re interested in doula/birth coaching services, I’d love to connect with you! 🥰✨

Birthing in a hospital setting can be a little tricky when it comes to wanting a low intervention birth. At any bump in the road or a slow down in progress, hospitals will most likely offer interventions such as pitocin or even IV through a cannula in your hand, pain relief eg morphine or epidural, even a vaginal exam can be an intervention.

When we have a birth plan, it helps create a path on the road, and prepares us for when we come across some bumps. Birth isn’t something we can totally control, and sometimes when an intervention if offered it can either benefit or impact our overall experience.

If a low intervention birth is highly desired, and you’re not sure if something offered is that you want, there’s nothing wrong with asking for more time. My client recently did a beautiful job of this in her recent successful physiological VBAC. Had she agreed to all the interventions she was offered, the outcome may not have been the same. Having a little more time to feel out how things are progressing can be highly beneficial in achieving your end goal, and helps to minimize any regrets or resentment that interventions can sometimes bring if things don’t go the way you hoped.

A SPECIAL POSTPARTUM VISIT 💗💗💗

When I supported Charlene through her incredible VBAC, I witnessed unbeatable strength, an outpouring of determination and a driving force that got baby Eden safely earthside. I will share her birth story soon as there is so much in it that I believe will help women wanting a VBAC for themselves.

I was lucky enough to have a cuddle with this little miss and debrief the birth with her parents. I was beyond grateful for their beautiful words of gratitude and knowing they were so pleased with how they were supported affirmed for me that this is a profession I was made for 🥹

I love postpartum visits (not just for the newborn cuddles) but because I love hearing the parents’ perspective. Things that were said that I totally forgot about or took no major notice of but were motivating for mum, the inner thoughts and feelings from dad, conversations that happened outside the room. All of it enhances the overall story and adds invaluable layers to the experience. Supporting a birth is not just physical support, it involves mental, emotional and spiritual support too.

Baby Eden is so blessed to have the most wonderful parents, especially her incredible mum who did it all just for her 👏💗✨

Happy World Breastfeeding Week!

Whether you choose to breastfeed for days, weeks, months or years, this special connection is one you’ll never forget.

How incredible are our bodies? That a mother’s body knows exactly what her baby needs and produces that through breastmilk. If your baby is sick, breastmilk will have the antibodies your baby needs just by the saliva from your baby when they breastfeed. It provides comfort, allows them to sleep, and has all the nutrition their little bodies needs.
It helps mum with weight loss, mood regulation, bonding, immune function, prevents breast cancer and the list goes on.

I feel beyond blessed to have been able to breastfeed both my girls past 12 months but a part of me is baffled by the fact that I’m 1 in the 5%.

No matter what your breastfeeding journey looked like, I invite you to be thankful, and look upon that time as one that was special and once in a lifetime 💗💗

FERTILITY IN POSTPARTUM

It can be a slippery slope of guessing whether or not your body is truly fertile again after having a baby. Lucky for us our bodies are incredibly smart and if we pay close enough attention we can figure out what exactly is going on.

How you feed your baby will impact when your body returns to fertility & menstruating. Breastfeeding & pumping do two different things to the body and this is where alot of women get confused when fertility starts to return. If you’re unsure on whether you’re fertile or not in your postpartum, look for the signs & see if you notice a pattern - you’ll see them either on your un**es, or how you feel.

DM me to chat more or if you need some clarity on what’s happening for you, I’m always happy to help 😊

CERVICAL DILATION - it’s the focus of any hospital birth but is it actually a good representation of how a woman is progressing?

It actually gives no indication of how much longer a woman will be in labour for - every woman’s body, labour, baby, mentality is different and it all affects how a cervix will dilate. So why are we so focused on using it as a measurement of how a woman progresses?

A more accurate way to know how a woman is progressing is looking at the pattern and intensity of contractions. Or even measuring the fundus (the muscle at the top of the uterus) is a better representation, without needing a vaginal exam.

Knowledge is power, and the more you know, the more equipped you are to make the right decisions for you, your baby and your partner.

Call it controversial, call it common sense, whatever you want to call it, let’s be honest here.

Induction rates are on the rise and these inductions are happening to perfectly healthy women who are simply past their “due date”. Some birth professionals say the first intervention in a pregnancy is the due date. Why? Because this date becomes the line in the sand that determines when/what further interventions occur.

If you want a low intervention/physiological birth, giving your body the time to be ready is the first step towards achieving that goal. If left alone, most women would have their baby by 42 weeks, so why are we rushing things?

On the flip side, if you ARE getting induced then it is absolutely possible for you to have a positive induction experience with low interventions. If I can do it, so can you.

Send me a message if you are looking for support with inductions, or even if you just want to jump on the induction rant train with me, I’d love to chat to you more 💪☺️
