When the role you've been eyeing gets advertised, both sound like "maybe next year", and most of us file it under not ready.

Not ready means there's a gap you can name. Waiting for permission is different. You already precept the grads and run the floor, but nobody has said out loud that you're ready for more.

That doubt hits in the first weeks as a new NUM or team leader, but those two are not the same thing.

Not ready would mean something’s missing in you. Never taught is different. You were great at the bedside, then got handed rosters, staffing and compliance, and nobody showed you the people side.

Feeling like a fraud usually doesn’t mean you’re wrong for the role. It means you’re learning a new one.

They feel the same when the "unfortunately" email lands, but they're not the same thing.

Not enough experience usually means you need more time. Not enough of it on paper is different. Another year on the ward helps, then you apply again and the same email comes back.

Sometimes it isn't your experience holding you back. It's the application.

Your experience covers more than most of us give it credit for. Precepting, leading shifts, quality projects, the deteriorating patient you caught early. The hard part is writing it so a panel sees the nurse you already are.
