**Your scar may be healed — so why does it still feel tight?**

Once the skin has closed, it’s easy to assume the scar has finished healing.

But the deeper tissues may still be changing.

Some scars can feel tight, sensitive, itchy or uncomfortable, and this can sometimes affect how freely you move.

For example, a scar around the chest or shoulder may affect reaching overhead or getting comfortable with everyday activities. It may also restrict posture and how you breathe.

A scar's appearance doesn't always tell us how it feels or how it's affecting someone's life.

If a scar is restricting movement, causing ongoing discomfort or concerning you, it's worth discussing it with your treating health professional.

Have you ever been surprised by how a scar felt, even after the skin had healed?

**Healing is important. But how your scar feels and how you move matter, too.** 💚

**Surgical recovery shouldn't be a guessing game. 💚**

Recovery is about more than an operation, a healing wound or reaching a certain number of weeks after surgery.

It's about getting back to everyday life — getting dressed easily, moving more freely, managing swelling or simply feeling more like yourself again.

But what happens when recovery doesn't go as expected? 🤷‍♀️

When a scar feels tight, swelling persists or movement remains difficult? And where do you turn when you're not sure what might help?

As an Occupational Therapist specialising in lymphoedema, scar management and complex post-surgical recovery, I want to share more about these often-overlooked parts of recovery.

I want to continue sharing practical tips, clinical insights and information to help you better understand what's happening, what you can do and where to turn for support.

What part of recovery do you wish you'd understood better before or after surgery?

Because recovery is about more than healing. It's about getting back to living.

**Let's rethink recovery.**

🟢 Compression can be confusing. 🟢

There are so many different garments, styles, fabrics, levels of firmness and ways to wear them — so where do you even start?

Before choosing a garment, consider:

1️⃣ Why do you need compression?
2️⃣ Which part of the body needs it?
3️⃣ How much compression is appropriate?
4️⃣ Would ready-to-wear or custom-made suit your shape?
5️⃣ Can you actually put it on, wear it and manage it in everyday life?

Because the “right” compression isn't necessarily the tightest garment or the most expensive one.

It needs to be appropriate for your needs, fit your body shape, and work in your real life.

Sometimes, you need to understand the problem before you can choose the right solution.

Putting compression garments on, can be like wrestling a fitted sheet onto a mattress by yourself 😁

Technique matters, and sometimes you need a different way of approaching it. 🛌

This is one thing I hear a lot in my work.

Putting on compression can be challenging, and for some, it can also feel like a workout. 💪😁

🔎Compression. It sounds simple enough… right? 🔎

“Wear compression they say.”

But then you start looking into it, and realise there are *SO many* options.

Ready-to-wear or custom-made?
Open toe or closed toe?
Smooth or textured?
Different fabrics, styles and levels of firmness?

And then there’ s the even bigger question:

**Which one is right for you?**

Compression isn’t one-size-fits-all — particularly after surgery.

The right garment can depend on your body, the area being treated, your swelling, your stage of recovery, what you need it to achieve, and what you can actually manage to wear consistently.

That’s why choosing compression isn’t simply about finding the tightest garment you can tolerate.

It’s about finding the **right type, fit and level of compression for your situation.**

Swipe through to see some of the different options 👆

And remember: if you’ve been told you need compression but you're left wondering *“Okay… but what exactly am I supposed to get?”* — you’re definitely not the only one.

Good recovery guidance and a compression expert are key to helping you navigate the world of compression! 🔐

🍀 Post-op swelling is common.🍀
But that doesn’t mean it should be ignored.

Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (IPC) can be one tool used to help manage swelling and support fluid movement during recovery.

But recovery isn’t about doing more.

It’s about understanding what your body needs, when it needs it, and why.

Less guessing.

More informed recovery.

Recovery doesn’t always move in a straight line. 💛

You might have a few good days… and then suddenly feel more tired, swollen, stiff or uncomfortable.

That doesn’t automatically mean you’ve gone backwards.

Recovery can be influenced by activity levels, sleep, stress, healing, changes in routine, and simply asking more of your body as you start doing more again.

The important thing is to notice the changes rather than dismiss them.

Sometimes your body is asking you to **slow down and adjust** — not stop altogether.

And sometimes a change in symptoms is worth getting checked.

👉 Swipe through for a reminder that **recovery isn't always about moving forward every single day.**

📌 Save this for the days when recovery feels frustrating.

If you’re new here, this 2-minute video is a little introduction to what I do and why. 👋

Recovery is about more than simply waiting for your wound to heal.

Swelling, scarring, sensitivity, stiffness, fibrosis and changes in movement can all have an impact on how you get back to everyday life.

I created this video originally for my Functional Living community, but thought it was worth sharing here too.

🎥 Have a watch — and if you’re recovering from surgery, I hope it helps you understand a little more about what Recover Better can mean.

📌 **Save this** for yourself or someone you know who's preparing for surgery.

And remember, recovery doesn't just start when you leave the hospital.

If you're navigating recovery right now, you don't have to figure it out alone. 💬

**Your scar might be completely healed… but that doesn’t necessarily mean your recovery is finished.** 🩹

A closed, healed scar is a milestone — but there can still be a lot happening underneath and around it.

You might still have:
• tightness or pulling
• tenderness or sensitivity
• numbness or altered sensation
• swelling
• restricted movement
• scar tissue or adhesions

And these things can affect how you move, how you feel, and how well you get back to doing the things you want to do.

**A healed scar is not always the end of the recovery story.**

If something still doesn’t feel right, you don't necessarily have to just accept it as *“part of recovery.”*

Understanding **what is happening and what you can do about it** can make a real difference.

That’s what Recover Better is about. ❤️
