Choosing a Supported Independent Living home is a big decision. The right support is only part of it, and who you share a home with matters just as much.

When someone asks about our SIL home in Cranbourne, these are the questions we explore together.

💙Can we meet your support needs? We look closely at whether we have the right care in place for you.
💙Is this the environment you’re looking for? Ours is an all female household, both the women who live here and the team who support them.
💙Will the lifestyle suit you? We talk through your routines, your interests and how much social time you like.
💙Will you get along with the women already living here? We think carefully about whether personalities and lifestyles will work well together.

We’d rather take the time to get this right than rush a move that doesn’t work for anyone. That’s how quality SIL works.

Our SIL home supports women aged 18 and over living with psychosocial disability and complex mental health needs across Melbourne’s south east.

If you’re looking into SIL for yourself, a family member or a participant you support, we’d love to show you through. Send us a message to arrange a visit.

What are the three things we'll never compromise on? Karen, our founder, shares them 💙

As a nurse of more than 15 years, Karen built Care With Dignity around a few beliefs that shape everything we do.

💙Adults are treated like adults. The people we support have their own choices, routines and opinions, and we respect them.
💙A home should feel like a home. Your own things on the walls, meals around the table and somewhere you actually want to come back to.
💙Clinical excellence matters. We're nurse owned and led, so good clinical care sits underneath all of it.

They guide how we work, every single day.

Most of the time it's made of small things, like getting out in the sun or baking something to share with the people around you.

Independence doesn't mean doing everything on your own 💙

For a lot of women living with psychosocial disability and complex mental health needs, it means having a say in how your days go, including the help you get.

Progress can be small, like cooking a meal you love or getting to an appointment by yourself.

Some weeks will be harder than others, and needing more support for a while doesn't take away from how far you've come.

If this sounds like someone you know, send it to them. Or save it for a day you need it.

Moving into SIL doesn’t mean losing your choice and control 💙

You still have your own routines, see your own GP and psychiatrist, make choices about your day and have a space that feels like yours.

But there are little things that can make a big difference to whether a house actually feels like a home.

💙 Can you bring your pet?
💙 Can you paint the walls of your bedroom?
💙 How much say do you have over meals, routines and shared spaces?
💙 Who will be around day to day?
💙 And what happens when you need more support?

These are questions worth asking before you move in.

We’ve put together five things we think every woman should know, and ask about, when considering SIL.

Save this for when you’re looking at your options.

"I wanted to work at a place where I could make a real difference, and now I do that every day."

Meet Paris 🩵

Paris is a disability support worker with our team at Care With Dignity, and in the video she shares what inspired her to work in disability support.

It's a role that means a lot to her personally.

The women she supports are, in her words, very close to her. And if you ask her about her favourite part of the day, she'll tell you it's cooking.

Paris is a big foodie, and loves cooking up a storm with clients.

We're so proud to have Paris on our team.

Give her a wave in the comments, and tell us: what's the best part of your working day? 👇

“They’re like my sisters. Karen’s like a mother figure, but she’s also like my big sister.” 💙

Dora has been part of the Valma family for nearly two years.

When she first came to Valma, it was about finding the right support. Now, it’s so much more than that.

It’s having people around you who know you, listen to you and make you feel at home.

Valma is a women-only SIL home in Cranbourne for women aged 18 and over living with psychosocial or complex mental health needs.

For us, it’s important the women who live here feel safe, supported and comfortable being themselves.

And hearing Dora say “I feel like this is my home now” means everything.

If you’d like to find out more about Valma, send us a direct message.

Usually you get one look at a SIL house. A walk through and then you're supposed to know.

Come with questions instead. Here are 5.

1. Who will I be living with?

Ask who else lives in the house. You should be able to meet them before you decide.

2. Will the people supporting me be women?

Not every provider can say yes. Some run mixed houses and staff them that way. If it matters to you, ask early.

3. How much are the rent and outgoings?

SIL funding pays for support, not rent, bills or food. Ask for the figure in writing, and how often you’d be paying it.

4. Is the house separate from the support?

They’re two different arrangements, often two different agreements. Ask which one you’re signing.

5. Are you a registered NDIS provider?

Ask what they’re registered to deliver, not just whether they’re registered.

For SIL they need registration group 0138, assistance with supported independent living.

You can check any provider yourself on the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission website under ‘Find a registered provider’.

That's Karen on the first slide, at the front door of our SIL house in Cranbourne. Contact us if you have questions, about any of this or about us.

A home of your own, with the right support around you. 💙

Come inside Valma, our women-only SIL home in Cranbourne.

Valma was our family home. It’s where we grew up, so it means a lot to us. We’ve kept that feeling of home at the heart of it.

There are shared spaces to spend time together, private bedrooms, a backyard to enjoy and, of course, Harriet, our resident cat. 🐈

Our female support workers are there to provide support, encouragement and a helping hand as the women at Valma build confidence, independence and everyday life skills.

Right now, there’s just one tenancy left.

Could Valma feel like home for you or someone you support?

Send us a DM to book a tour.
