It is National Carers Week, and this year's theme is making carers visible.

The carers we see most are the ones nobody counts: a parent who has learned an entire system, and a support worker who knows exactly how a morning has to go.

When someone moves into one of our homes, that second person does not have to disappear. Support workers a participant already trusts can come with them. Our teams also include workers who speak the languages spoken at home, including Dari and Pashto.

Four steps and one common mistake, from the coordinators we work with most.

Registration first. Worker continuity second. The ratio and housemate mix in that actual house, not the average. Then when intake can genuinely start.

The house is rarely what keeps a family awake. It is the people.

When a move is coming, the question we hear first is whether he has to start again with new support workers. He does not. Workers a participant knows can come with them.

A room being ready is not the same as a placement being ready. The gap is usually intake, not the participant.

Registration is not a badge. It is an audit, a worker screening regime, and a reporting trail.

Since 1 July, supported independent living has been a mandatory registration category with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, and from 1 October providers who are not registered or have not applied cannot keep delivering it.

Vitality Support Care is fully registered. Our homes are accessible and non-clinical, we work at ratios of 1:1 to 1:3, and our teams include workers who speak the languages our participants speak at home.

"Ready for discharge" and "ready to move in" are two different things, and the gap between them is where a good plan goes quiet.

Most stalls come down to three things: nobody has a current vacancy list, intake does not start until every signature lands, and a change of provider means a change of faces.

We are a fully registered SIL provider. We start intake from the brief, not after it. And participants keep the support workers they already know, which is usually the part families are most worried about.
