Meet Kay, a proud Kamilaroi woman and one of our compassionate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advanced Health Workers. โญ

Working at the Sexual Assault Support Service (SASS), Kay is here to support victim-survivors of sexual assault by providing culturally appropriate support. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›โค๏ธ

"I'm here to provide support through yarning or visits. I can also help with cultural sessions and activities."

Kay says she joined SASS because she wanted to make a difference for mob.

"When I was younger, a service like SASS was never around, and people didnโ€™t have the support and culturally safe connection that is available today," she said.

"I wanted to be that person for others โ€” someone who understands culture, community, and the importance of feeling safe and heard"

Kay says sadly many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experience sexual violence in their lifetime.

"Sexual violence can affect not only the victim, but also their families and our mob," Kay said.

"I hope we can send the message to people who have experienced assault that you are not to blame, and feelings of shame belong to the person who caused the harm."

If you need help and want to speak to Kay, contact SASS on 4699 7000.

If you've been sexually assaulted and need help, there's now another option on the Darling Downs.

A new community nurse-led sexual assault clinic at the Baillie Henderson campus has officially opened, providing high quality, person centred and trauma-informed care for people disclosing sexual assault.

The clinic is staffed by members from our Sexual Assault Support Service and includes specialist nurses who have undergone extensive training.

It's a safe space - it's open to anyone 14-years and above who has experienced sexual assault within the last seven days.

The clinic is the first of its kind in Queensland - it operates between Monday to Friday, during business hours. People seeking help at the clinic are urged to phone first.

People seeking help can self-refer or get advice by contacting SASS on 4699 7000. People can also be referred to the clinic by organisations including the Queensland Ambulance Service and the Queensland Police Service.

If you've experienced sexual assault within the last two years, you can also access counselling services at the clinic.

Know that if you need help - whatever you choose to do, your choice will be supported.

๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿฝโœจ Celebrating connection, culture and community โœจ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿฝ

Despite the rainy weather, Friday 23 October was a beautiful day of celebration as families came together for our Welcome Baby to Community event. ๐Ÿ’›

A heartfelt thank you to all the families who joined us and helped make the day so special. A special thank you also goes to the Wilsonton State High School Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dance Group for sharing their culture and bringing so much joy to the celebration with their beautiful performance.

The rain certainly didnโ€™t dampen our spirits! It was wonderful to see families and community come together to celebrate our jarjums, honouring the love, strength and connections that help our little ones grow with a strong sense of identity and belonging.

Weโ€™re proud to stand alongside our partners at Carbal Medical Services in supporting families and raising awareness of the importance of birth registration, helping ensure every child is recognised and has a strong foundation for the future.

Our jarjums are our future. By celebrating our little ones, strengthening community connections and keeping culture strong, we help nurture belonging, identity and connection for generations to come. ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ–คโค๏ธ

Three cheers for our 2026 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander school-based trainees! ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›โค๏ธ

We had the pleasure of celebrating the hard work of our second cohort of trainees and their incredible achievement of completing a 375-hour traineeship.

Their journey has been inspirational, with the trainees also having to fit in school, study and other commitments.

Darling Downs Health also had the privilege of helping two students become the first with Queensland Health to achieve a Certificate III in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care.

We also wanted to thank the parents, friends and relatives for their unwavering support for these future stars of health care. โค๏ธ

[Content warning: Sexual Assault]

If you have been affected by sexual violence, it is important to know there is help.

Our Sexual Assault Support Service (SASS) is one option for accessing comprehensive and compassionate care.

People seeking help can also self-refer or get advice by contacting SASS on 4699 7000 (during business hours) - you can also be referred to the service by groups or professionals including the Queensland Ambulance Service, Queensland Police Service, school counsellors and GPs.

The service is staffed by specialist nurses, who have undergone extensive training and is open to anyone 14-years and above who have experienced sexual assault within the last seven days.

If you seek help from SASS, all information will be confidential. Our records are stored securely and separately from your regular medical records. This ensures that they are not accessible to other health workers when you attend regular health appointments.

You can also speak to a specialist counsellor at SASS who will listen to you, explain your options and support your choices.

If you've been affected by sexual violence - it is not your fault, and you are not to blame, you are not alone.
