🦵 Still experiencing restless legs despite using CPAP?

Restless legs syndrome and sleep apnoea can occur together, but they need different treatments. CPAP helps keep your airway open—it doesn’t directly treat the urge to move your legs.

Medicines for restless legs may help, but side effects such as dizziness, unsteadiness and daytime drowsiness deserve attention.

If leg symptoms continue or sleepiness worsens after starting medication, speak with your prescribing doctor or sleep specialist. Keep using CPAP as prescribed and seek advice before changing or stopping medicines.

Struggling with restless legs at night?

Some simple measures may help:

• Exercise regularly, but avoid intense workouts close to bedtime
• Reduce afternoon and evening caffeine
• Limit alcohol
• Try a warm shower, gentle stretching or leg massage
• Maintain a consistent sleep routine

These strategies may reduce symptoms, but ongoing or severe restless legs should still be discussed with your GP—particularly if they are regularly affecting your sleep or daytime functioning.

Restless legs syndrome and sleep apnoea can occur at the same time.

Restless legs may make it difficult to fall asleep, while sleep apnoea repeatedly interrupts breathing after you are asleep. Both conditions can leave you feeling exhausted during the day.

If you experience nighttime leg restlessness together with loud snoring, daytime sleepiness or witnessed pauses in breathing, it is worth discussing both concerns with your GP.

A sleep study may help identify sleep apnoea and repeated leg movements occurring during sleep.

Could low iron be contributing to your restless legs?

Iron deficiency can trigger or worsen restless legs syndrome—even when you have not been diagnosed with anaemia.

If you regularly experience crawling, pulling or restless sensations in your legs at night, ask your GP whether tests such as ferritin and transferrin saturation are appropriate.

Do not begin iron supplements without testing and professional advice, as too much iron can also be harmful.

Restless legs syndrome is more than simply feeling “fidgety.”

The typical pattern includes:

• An uncomfortable urge to move your legs
• Symptoms beginning or worsening while resting
• Temporary relief from walking or movement
• Symptoms becoming worse in the evening or at night

If this sounds familiar, speak with your GP. Restless legs syndrome is a recognised condition, and identifying possible causes is the first step towards better sleep.
