Resentment can be uncomfortable because it conflicts with how many people see themselves: caring, capable, generous and easy to be around.

But resentment is often worth becoming curious about.

Is the relationship genuinely unequal?

Have your limits repeatedly been ignored?

Are you agreeing to things you do not actually want to do?

Are you hoping someone will notice a need that you feel uncomfortable stating directly?

Sometimes the answer is a firmer boundary. Sometimes it is a clearer request. Sometimes it is recognising that another person is unwilling to participate fairly.

The aim is not to become less generous. It is to make generosity something you choose rather than something required to keep the relationship safe.

Your child fails the test.
Doesn’t get invited.
Loses the game.
Gets corrected.

“Whatever. I don’t care.”

Sometimes they genuinely do not care very much.

But sometimes indifference is protective.

If wanting something makes you vulnerable to disappointment, convincing yourself it did not matter can reduce the sting.

Before challenging the attitude, it can help to wonder what is underneath it.

“You’re saying you don’t care. I wonder if part of you is disappointed too?”

The goal is not to force a confession. It is to leave room for the feeling underneath the armour

Depression does not have one presentation.

For some people, sadness is obvious. For others, the more noticeable experience is emptiness, disconnection, exhaustion, irritability or simply not enjoying much anymore.

People who remain highly functional can find this particularly difficult to recognise because they continue meeting responsibilities.

But “I can still do it” and “doing it is costing me enormously” are very different things.

If pleasure, motivation, connection or hope have changed significantly and the change is persisting, an assessment with a psychologist can help clarify what is happening.

Relief and grief are not opposites.

You can know that leaving was right and still mourn what you hoped the relationship would become.

You can be relieved to finish a difficult job and still miss the people, identity or certainty attached to it.

You can feel grateful for treatment ending and unsettled by everything illness changed.

Sometimes we grieve not because we want the old situation back, but because we once hoped it would become something different.

Mixed feelings do not mean you made the wrong decision.

We tend to respond to procrastination with more pressure.

Make a stricter schedule. Try harder. Stop being lazy. Just get it done.

But avoidance often serves an immediate emotional function: it allows us to step away from something uncomfortable.

This is why understanding the specific friction matters.

If the problem is uncertainty, clarify the first step.
If it is perfectionism, deliberately produce a rough version.
If it is overwhelm, shrink the task.
If it is fear, acknowledge the fear rather than pretending the task is emotionally neutral.

Behaviour change becomes easier when we stop treating every difficulty starting as a character flaw.

Some people become exceptionally skilled at reading a room.

You notice who is uncomfortable. Who needs reassurance. Who is getting left out. Who needs help before they ask.

That sensitivity can be a genuine strength.

But if your attention has spent years travelling outward, turning it inward can feel surprisingly difficult.

“What do I want?”
“Am I actually okay with this?”
“What would make this easier for me?”

Self-awareness is not selfishness. Your needs are information too.

If your child seems to save their hardest behaviour for home, it can feel both confusing and deeply frustrating.

One useful question is not simply “Why are they reacting like this?” but “How much regulation has today already required?”

Children vary considerably in how demanding school feels. Noise, transitions, sustained attention, social interpretation, academic effort, inhibition and sensory discomfort can all add to the load.

None of this means unsafe behaviour should be ignored. Limits remain important. But an exhausted child may need regulation before reflection.

Sometimes the most useful after-school intervention is surprisingly ordinary: food, quiet, movement, connection and temporarily lowering unnecessary demands.

Evidence informing this post: self-regulation and executive functioning, stress and cognitive control, sensory processing, neurodivergence and co-regulation.

New beginnings are often presented as clean, hopeful and exciting.

In reality, transitions can contain grief even when the change was chosen, necessary or ultimately positive.

You may miss:

• who you were
• what you expected
• what felt familiar
• the certainty you once had
• the people or places connected to the previous chapter

You do not need to force enthusiasm to prove that you are moving forward.

Sometimes moving forward begins with being honest about what it has cost.

Behaviour-change plans often fail because they are designed around enthusiasm rather than repetition.

Motivation can help us begin, but habits become more sustainable when the behaviour has a clear cue, a manageable starting point and a version that remains possible on lower-capacity days.

This does not mean every goal should remain tiny. Actions can gradually expand as they become more familiar and easier to initiate.

The starting question is not:

“What would be the most impressive plan?”

It is:

“What could I realistically repeat in the life I actually have?”
