🌿 SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO STEP AWAY TO SEE THINGS MORE CLEARLY.
I've been a little quieter with Community Hub of Hope over the past few weeks.
After months of researching, speaking with professionals, collecting questionnaires and developing the concept, I decided to give myself some space from it.
And I'm actually glad I did.
Because I've come back looking at the project a little differently.
When I first started this journey, I needed to know whether what I'd experienced as a parent was something other families were experiencing too.
The conversations and professional feedback I've received since have given me a much clearer understanding of the challenges that can exist when school finishes — particularly around friendship, purpose, independence, meaningful participation and finding the right pathway into adult life.
So I feel like the project is entering a different stage now.
Less about asking whether there's a need.
More about working out what the best response to that need could actually look like.
Community Hub of Hope was never meant to be somewhere young adults simply go to fill their day.
The vision has always been bigger than that.
A place to discover strengths.
A place to learn practical skills.
A place to contribute and take responsibility.
A place to develop confidence and independence.
A place where friendships can happen naturally.
A place that can create pathways into volunteering, further learning and employment.
And most importantly...
A place to belong.
There is still an enormous amount for me to learn and work through, and I'm not pretending to have all the answers.
But that's okay.
Good ideas shouldn't be rushed.
They should be questioned, researched, challenged and developed properly.
That's what the next chapter of Community Hub of Hope is going to be about.
🌿 Turning everything I've learned so far into something that could one day make a genuine difference.

Learn. Grow. Connect. Belong.

🌱 COMMUNITY HUB OF HOPE IS NOT ABOUT FILLING SOMEONE'S DAY.
I want to clear something up about the vision behind Community Hub of Hope.
This isn't about creating somewhere for young adults with disability to go for six hours a day simply to stay busy, be entertained or fill in time.
That is not the goal.
The goal is to prepare people for life.
Cooking at the Hub isn't just an activity.
It's learning how to prepare your own meal.
Gardening isn't just something to do on a Tuesday morning.
It's responsibility, teamwork, routine and potentially a pathway towards employment.
Working in a café isn't about keeping someone occupied.
It's learning customer service, handling money, communication, punctuality, workplace expectations and what it means to have people relying on you.
Going into the community isn't simply an outing.
It's learning how to navigate the world with greater confidence and independence.
Even making mistakes matters.
Because learning how to solve problems, ask for help and try again is part of becoming an adult.
Everything should have a purpose.
For one person, success might eventually mean paid employment or further education.
For another, it might mean volunteering several days a week.
For someone else, it could mean learning to catch public transport independently, cook dinner, manage their money, make genuine friendships or contribute meaningfully to their community.
There shouldn't be one definition of success.
And there certainly shouldn't be one assumption about what somebody is capable of because they have a disability.
Community Hub of Hope would start with a different question:
“What kind of life does this person want — and what skills, experiences and opportunities will help them get there?”
Then we work towards it.
Over time, the goal should be more confidence, more capability, more choice and greater independence wherever possible.
Not dependency.
Not simply attendance.
And definitely not filling hours.
We're not trying to build a place where people spend their lives.
❤️ We're trying to build a place that helps people build their lives.

WHY ARE WE WAITING FOR A CRISIS?
I've been doing a lot of thinking about the future of Community Hub of Hope.
We often talk about what will happen to an adult living with disability when their parents become elderly, sick, or eventually pass away.
But I've started asking a different question.
Why are we waiting until then?
Why aren't we spending the next 10, 20 or 30 years helping that person build a life that isn't completely dependent on Mum and Dad?
That doesn't mean replacing family.
It means starting early.
Building confidence.
Learning to cook.
Learning to travel.
Managing money.
Finding meaningful work or volunteering.
Developing friendships.
Knowing people in the community.
Having responsibilities.
Being somewhere you're expected.
And gradually building a network of people around you.
That's something I want Community Hub of Hope to work towards.
Not crisis management at 40 or 50.
Preparation from 18, 19 and 20.
Imagine the difference between a parent reaching old age thinking:
"What on earth is going to happen when I'm gone?"
and thinking:
"We've spent years preparing for this. My son has a life. He has people. He has somewhere he belongs."
That is a very different future.
And perhaps one of the greatest things Community Hub of Hope could ever achieve wouldn't happen inside the Hub at all.
It would happen at home.
It would be a parent finally sleeping at night knowing they don't have to carry their child's entire future alone.

🌿 WHAT IF THE ENVIRONMENT WE LEARN IN MATTERS JUST AS MUCH AS WHAT WE'RE LEARNING?
This is something I've been researching recently, and it really caught my attention.
Research into outdoor education and nature-based programs has found positive outcomes across areas including wellbeing, relationships, confidence, personal growth, self-efficacy and achievement.
And it made me think about something.
For many young adults living with disability, learning can happen in clinical rooms, offices or highly structured programs.
But imagine learning differently.
🌱 Don't teach gardening from a worksheet — grow something.
🍳 Don't just talk about cooking — prepare a real meal.
🐾 Don't explain responsibility — have an animal relying on you every morning.
☕ Don't simulate employment — learn hospitality while serving real people.
💰 Don't simply teach budgeting — use it in everyday situations.
🤝 Don't teach "social skills" entirely in a clinical setting — create opportunities where genuine friendships can naturally develop.
That's a huge part of the thinking behind Community Hub of Hope.
I don't want young adults sitting in rooms being constantly told how the real world works.
I want the real world to become the classroom.
Gardens.
Animals.
Hospitality.
Nature.
Community.
Responsibility.
Friendship.
Real experiences with real outcomes.
Importantly, I'm not suggesting clinical therapies don't have their place — they absolutely do.
But what if we combined professional support with environments where people can actually practise, experience, contribute and belong?
That's the kind of learning environment we want Community Hub of Hope to create.
Because sometimes the best classroom...
doesn't have four walls. 🌿

🌱 WHAT IF THE GOAL WASN’T TO “KEEP PEOPLE BUSY”?
That question has been sitting with me.
When a young person with disability leaves school, we often talk about programs, services, support hours and activities.
But maybe we should be asking something different:
What kind of life are we helping them build?
Community Hub of Hope isn't being imagined as somewhere people simply turn up, do an activity and go home.
I want it to be somewhere people can matter.
☕ Someone isn't just attending a cooking activity — they're learning hospitality and helping prepare something for another person.
🌱 They aren't just doing gardening — they're growing food, maintaining something they're proud of and seeing the results of their work.
🐾 They aren't just spending time with animals — they're learning responsibility, routine and care.
🤝 They aren't attending a "social group" — they're meeting people, discovering common interests and hopefully developing friendships that don't exist because somebody is being paid to be there.
🔨 They aren't being kept occupied — they're discovering what they're good at.
And maybe, eventually, that becomes volunteering.
Maybe it becomes employment.
Maybe it becomes greater independence.
Or maybe it simply becomes the first place where someone wakes up in the morning and thinks:
“I've got somewhere to go today, and they need me there.”
That's the difference I want Community Hub of Hope to create.
Not a place built around disability.
A place built around purpose, opportunity and belonging.
Because adulthood should be about more than filling someone's week.
It should be about helping them build a life that actually feels like theirs.

Community Hub of Hope isn't about creating another day program.
It's about creating futures.
We want young adults living with disability to wake up each morning knowing they have somewhere they belong. Somewhere they are valued. Somewhere they can learn, contribute and build a life they can be proud of.
Imagine a place where participants can...
🌿 Learn to grow fresh produce in a community garden.
🐓 Care for animals and experience the responsibility that comes with it.
☕ Learn hospitality skills by making coffee, serving customers and working as part of a team.
🍳 Build confidence in the kitchen by preparing meals for others.
💪 Improve their health and wellbeing through fitness and outdoor activities.
🤝 Develop genuine friendships with people who choose to spend time together—not just because they're paid to.
🎓 Learn practical life skills like budgeting, cooking, travel training and independent living.
💼 Gain volunteering opportunities, work experience and real pathways into employment.
❤️ Most importantly... discover confidence, purpose and a sense of belonging.
Success won't be measured by how many hours someone attends.
It will be measured by someone getting their first job.
Making their first real friend.
Cooking their own meal.
Travelling independently.
Feeling confident enough to try something they never thought possible.
The goal has never been to keep people busy.
The goal is to help people build a life.
That's the future we're working towards with Community Hub of Hope.
One opportunity. One friendship. One life changed at a time.

What if the biggest disability isn't autism... but a lack of opportunity?
Every day, we hear about the rising demand for workers.
At the same time, thousands of young adults with autism leave school full of potential, only to find themselves sitting at home because no one created a pathway for them.
Not because they don't want to contribute.
Not because they don't have strengths.
But because no one took the time to bridge the gap between school and adulthood.
Imagine if we stopped asking, "Can they work?"..and started asking, "What environment will allow them to succeed?"
Imagine workplaces where they could build confidence before being judged.
Imagine communities where they could form friendships before facing isolation.
Imagine learning life skills through real experiences instead of worksheets.
Imagine being valued for what they can do instead of being defined by what they can't.
The question isn't whether these young adults have something to offer.
The question is...
How much talent, kindness, loyalty and potential are we losing because we haven't built the right opportunities?
That is the future I hope we can create.
One where every young adult has the chance to learn, grow, connect and belong.
Because when we create opportunities, everyone benefits. ❤️
