Soulwata Balaz had the pleasure of delivering a Torres Strait Islander cultural learning experience to the Year 4 students of Emmanuel Catholic Primary School on Friday.

The knowledges shared were taught to me by my Grandfather Vincent Dorante (Pearl diver) and Father Stanley Dorante, it is my passion to keep the fire burning sharing these knowledges.

During the session, students had the opportunity to learn traditional Torres Strait Islander cultural practices, including language, coconut scraping, spear-making and throwing, and cast net throwing.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to our special helpers, Mr Roman Dorante and Mrs Banx Bobongie , for their valuable support and assistance in making this experience a success.

Thank you to Emmanuel Catholic Primary School for the opportunity to share our culture, knowledge and traditions with the next generation.

Soulwata Balaz had the pleasure of delivering a Torres Strait Islander cultural learning experience to the Year 4 students of Emmanuel Catholic Primary School on Friday.

Thank you, Uncle Bixks Harlz , for taking us out on the river to catch fish. It was a great day on the water, and a special milestone for Lennox, throwing a cast net and catching some big mullet up the river. Experiences like these help pass on valuable skills, knowledge, and culture to the next generation. We were able to share our catch amongst families and elders💙

We recently undertook a heritage tour with Nana Tass, who generously shared her personal story of growing up in the region. She spoke about living off the land and river, and her childhood years attending school. Nana Tass spoke about the many memories of growing up in Balnagowan.

It was remarkable to see that a few of the original structures remain standing after all these years, offering a tangible connection to the past. The strength, resilience and culture that has been shared with in our families we are deeply thankful that it has passed on to our young boys.

This was a great opportunity for the Soulwata Balaz to reflect of where they are today because of our elders.

The tour concluded with a special accordion performance by Nan, followed by lunch by the river.
