Achy joints at 45? It might not just be getting older.

Today is World Menopause Day, and this year's focus is chronic pain at midlife. It's about time.
Around 70% of women get joint pain, stiffness or aches through perimenopause and menopause. For about a quarter, it's debilitating. And it's one of the most overlooked symptoms of all.

If your body has started to hurt in new ways, mention it. It's worth a proper look 🧡

Brain fog or early dementia? How can you tell the difference? 🧠

For many women going through perimenopause or menopause, forgetting words, struggling to concentrate, or finding everyday tasks suddenly difficult can be genuinely frightening.

But does it mean something more serious is happening?

In this clip from Fiercely Well, A/Prof Caroline Gurvich () explains some of the differences between menopausal brain fog and dementia, including who tends to notice the symptoms first and how they change over time.

She also offers reassurance that young-onset dementia between the ages of 40 and 60 is uncommon, and cognitive changes during menopause do not automatically mean dementia.

Today was a good one đź’›

Started with brunch with the gorgeous Evangeline, founder of Zöe+Hope Skin. She’s an absolute gem, and it was her birthday too! 🎂🎉 We got talking all things skin in perimenopause and menopause, from the dryness, sensitivity and changes so many women notice.

Then I headed to the opening of the Women’s and Reproductive Mental Health Collective (WARM), a new specialist women’s mental health clinic right here in Collingwood.

It was a room full of people who care deeply about women’s health, and especially specialist mental health care for women. So much good energy and so much to celebrate. Here’s to more spaces that truly see women. ✨

Your choice of contraception may affect more than birth control.

A/Prof Niloufar Torkamani shares her concerns about some high-dose synthetic progestogen-only contraceptives, including implants and injections, and discusses why she considers their potential effects on estrogen levels when advising patients.
Her message: contraception is a personal medical decision, and understanding the benefits, risks and alternatives matters.

Who is a candidate for menopausal hormone therapy?

In this clip from Fiercely Well, A/Prof Niloufar Torkamani shares her approach to MHT: she believes it should be considered for women going through menopause unless there is a significant medical reason that makes it unsuitable.
Her message is about changing the conversation from “Should I consider MHT?” to having an informed discussion about “Is there a reason MHT isn’t right for me?”

MHT isn’t appropriate for everyone. Treatment should be individually assessed with a qualified healthcare professional, taking personal symptoms, medical history and risk factors into account.

Could hair loss be one of the first signs of perimenopause?

The scalp is skin too — and it has estrogen receptors.
In this clip from Fiercely Well, A/Prof Niloufar Torkamani explains how falling estrogen levels during perimenopause can affect the scalp and why some women may notice hair thinning or increased hair loss even while their periods are still regular.
Sometimes the changes are subtle: hair loss, bloating, feeling a little “off” or simply not feeling like yourself.

If you’re experiencing new or unexplained hair loss, speak with your healthcare professional about possible causes.

Calcium supplements aren’t always as harmless as they may seem. 🦴

In Episode 2 of Fiercely Well, A/Prof Niloufar Torkamani shares her perspective on calcium supplementation and why she believes calcium should primarily come from the diet unless there is a clinical reason for supplementation.
She also discusses her concerns around unnecessary long-term calcium supplementation and the potential for calcium buildup in the arteries.
The takeaway? More isn’t always better when it comes to supplements.
