Most people have no idea how strong their hips and knees actually are. You can find out in 30 seconds with a dining chair.

Push the chair against a wall so it can’t slide. Sit with your feet flat and your arms crossed over your chest. Set a timer for 30 seconds, then stand all the way up and sit all the way back down as many times as you can.

Under 60, aim for 15 reps. Over 60, aim for at least 12.

Your form tells us as much as your score. If your knees cave in, your outer hips need some work. If you’re leaning heavily forward, your back is picking up the slack for your glutes and quads. And if you shift to one side, one leg is working harder than the other.

That moment you wake up stiff, it’s worse than yesterday, and your first instinct is to cancel everything and lie flat.

Totally understandable. Also usually the slowest way out.

Most flare-ups aren’t a sign you’ve done new damage. Your nervous system has just turned the volume up on an area it was already a bit protective of. Couch days tend to make it more protective, not less, which is why three days of rest so often turns into three weeks of easing back in.

What helps is staying in the game at a smaller size. Shorter walk. Lighter weights. Same Pilates class, fewer springs. Then working out what changed in the lead-up, because there’s nearly always something.

And if it’s not settling after a couple of weeks, or something feels genuinely off, that’s when we want to see you.

Save this for the next time your back has opinions. If you’re in one right now, we can help you work out what moved. Link in bio.

We clock a lot more than your name when you walk through the door.

Most people arrive ready to explain where it hurts, and we want to hear all of it. But by the time you sit down we’ve usually noticed which shoulder your bag lives on and whether you needed the armrests to get up.

None of that gets written down as a diagnosis. It just means our first questions are sharper, so you spend less of your appointment explaining and more of it getting treated.

Little experiment for your next walk: pay attention to which arm swings more. Then tell us below, left or right.

If something’s been niggling for a while, osteo bookings are open. Link in bio.

We’ve heard every one of these this week. Some of them before 9am.

None of it is a dig. Most people walk in already worried because someone told them their back “went out” or their scan looks like it belongs to their nan. And honestly, that worry often hurts more than the thing itself.

The one we’d love to retire first is the spine of an 80 year old line. Plenty of people with zero pain have a scan that looks just like yours. Wear on an image doesn’t mean you’re fragile, and it definitely doesn’t mean you’re stuck with it.

So if you’ve said any of these to us, you’re in good company. We’d just rather you leave the appointment knowing what’s actually going on, not only that something clicked.

Your hip flexors feel tight, so you stretch them. By lunchtime they’re tight again.

That’s because tight hip flexors usually aren’t short. More often they’re overworked, gripping because they’re not strong enough for what you’re asking of them. Stretching gives you a few minutes of relief, then you’re right back where you started.

So we strengthen them instead. The three from the video:

1. Plank with resisted knee drive
2. Standing short-lever hip flexion hold
3. Static crunch with resisted hip flexion

Strong hip flexors rarely feel tight. Pick 1-2 suitable exercises to add into your week and notice how your hips feel next time you get out of the car.

Save this for your next session.

Pregnancy doesn't mean you have to give up the reformer - it just means adapting your practice! 🤍 Keep the "Three P's" in mind to stay safe and comfortable:

Pace yourself: Feeling off, fatigued, or lightheaded? Slow your transitions, reduce the intensity, or take a rest. Your workout doesn't need to look the same every day.

Positioning: As your belly grows, avoid lying flat on your back for prolonged periods. Use a wedge, prop yourself up on your elbows, or switch to side-lying.

Pain, Pressure, and Peeing: If you experience pain, pelvic pressure, leaking, or excessive abdominal doming, it's time to modify. Reduce your range of motion or try new positions like 4-point kneeling.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach, so always check in with your body and adapt as you go.

Living with an inflammatory condition doesn’t mean you're destined for constant flare-ups. Alongside your medical treatment, there are everyday steps you can take to support your overall health, reduce disease activity, and potentially increase the time between flares.

Try focusing on these six lifestyle factors:
☀️ Vitamin D
😴 Sleep
🥗 Nutrition
🏃‍♀️ Exercise
🧘‍♀️ Down-regulation (stress management)
🧠 Mental health

What steps are you taking today to support your body?

Wrists aching during planks is one of the most common things we hear in reformer class. Most people push through or sit the plank out.

Neither is necessary. Your wrists are taking your body weight while bent close to 90 degrees, so the fix is keeping the plank, but changing the angle or the load once the wrists start to feel uncomfortable.

- Forearms on the carriage gets your wrists out of it completely, and your core still works just as hard.
- Hands on the foot bar lifts your shoulders above your hips and takes a good chunk of weight off
- Wrapping your hands around the shoulder blocks means you’re gripping instead of pressing down through the joint (This one barely gets taught, and it’s often the one that clicks).

If your wrists are still grumbling after a few weeks of swaps, come and see us in the clinic so we can look at what’s going on.

Save this for your next class.

Never seen an osteo before? Here's exactly what happens in the room.

We start with a chat about what's going on, then get hands on. In this session we worked through the neck, upper back, lower back and even the feet, using manual therapy and soft tissue techniques to ease tension and get things moving better.

Yes, the feet. Everything's connected, so we look at the whole picture, not just where it hurts.

If you've been putting off booking because you're not sure what to expect, this is your sign. Link in bio to book.

Nobody warns you that the workout that kept you strong for 15 years can quietly stop working somewhere in your 40s.

You're still turning up. Still doing the classes, the walks, the light weights. And yet you're stiffer, you take longer to bounce back, and the scales are telling a different story around your middle.

That's not you slacking off. Oestrogen was doing a lot of the heavy lifting for your muscle and bone, and once it starts to drop, your body needs a different kind of signal to keep adapting.

The good news is that strength is still very much on the table through perimenopause. It just takes heavier loads, a bit of impact, and smarter recovery than it used to.

Save this one so you've got it handy for your next session, and send it to the friend who keeps saying her knees have "just got old".

If you'd like a program built around where your body is right now, book an assessment through the link in bio.
