Participation matters 💚

Happy World Occupational Therapy Day!

For children, participation can mean joining a game, making a friend, getting dressed, exploring something new or feeling comfortable enough to give something tricky a go.

As OTs, we support children to take part in the everyday moments that matter to them, in ways that honour their individual strengths, interests and needs.

These photos capture some of those moments: connection, creativity, problem-solving and plenty of play!

Thank you to the wonderful children and families who let us be part of their journey. Celebrating every step with you is such a privilege 🌿

That’s a wrap for our Hunter 2026 October School Readiness Group!

What a fun and rewarding time we’ve had together! Throughout our groups we targeted a range of school readiness areas, including:
✂️ Fine motor development and scissor skills  
✏️ Pre-handwriting skills, pencil grasp, letter and number recognition  
🏃 Gross motor activities and body awareness  
🧠 Focus, attention, working memory and cognitive flexibility  
🤝 Social engagement, turn-taking, communication and group participation  
💛 Recognising, labelling and expressing emotions  
🌱 Self-regulation strategies and emotional awareness  
📚 Social stories and conversations around preparing for the move to school  

It has been amazing to watch each child grow in confidence, independence and connection throughout the group!

Visual perceptual skills are the unsung heroes of learning, reading, writing and everyday play ✏️📖🎲👀
It’s more than what our eyes see; it how the brain makes sense of visual information.
From scanning across a busy worksheet, following sentences in a book, to recognising that “b” is different from “d”; strong visual perception forms the foundations of success in countless play and academic tasks. 
We love targeting these skills using playful, hands-on activities including:
 ✨ Spot It! & I Spy Games: Visual scanning, rapid saccadic eye movements, visual attention, processing speed, discrimination and figure-ground perception.
✨ Shadow Matching & Spot the Difference: Form constancy, spatial orientation, visual discrimination and attention.
✨ Geometric Puzzles & Puzzles with Visual Cues: visual-spatial reasoning, figure-ground, and visual closure.
✨ Word Searches & Letter Matching: Letter discrimination (differentiating b, d, p, q), visual closure, and spatial sequencing.
✨ Card matching: visual memory, discrimination and sequential memory.

Who said Jenga was just about pulling out blocks?

One of my favourite ways to adapt Jenga in sessions is to get the child involved in writing challenges, questions or prompts on the blocks — making a familiar game work towards their individual goals.
💪 “Do 5 push-ups”
🧠 “What is 9 × 3?”
💭 “When was the last time you felt happy/sad/angry?”
🥱 “Name 3 things you can do when you need a break”
It’s a simple way to work on fine motor skills through writing while also supporting engagement, regulation, emotional expression, problem-solving, movement and so much more.

The best part? You can completely adjust the prompts depending on what the child is working towards — turning one simple game into a really versatile and fun therapy activity.

Pop it in a tray with scoops, cups or little toys for pouring, scooping and exploring. Save this one for your next rainy day! ✨

Why are our holiday groups different? 💖

Because for us, it’s about connection—not just care.

Our groups are thoughtfully designed and facilitated by paediatric Occupational Therapists, creating a safe and supportive space where children can feel understood, build confidence and connect with others.

Through play and engaging activities, we gently support:

✨ Emotional and sensory regulation
✨ Confidence and independence
✨ Communication and teamwork
✨ Flexibility, turn-taking and problem-solving
✨ Fine and gross motor development

Every child is supported at their own pace, with activities adapted to meet their individual needs. Most importantly, our groups are full of movement, laughter, encouragement and FUN!
