“Can I ingest your oils?
I see people online taking other brands directly or adding them to water all the time—does that mean yours aren't as pure?” 🌿💧
This is a question I get asked so often at the markets!
Because taking essential oils internally has become such a big trend on social media, many people have been led to believe that "if an oil is truly pure, it should be safe to swallow." Following that logic, people assume that if a brand advises against ingesting their oils, they must be low quality or "inferior."
I want to be completely open and transparent with you:
That idea is a marketing myth, not a safety standard. 🚫
Here is what’s really going on behind the scenes:
🌿 Direct exposure is harsh on delicate tissue: Essential oils do not dissolve in water. Putting drops directly into your mouth, under your tongue, or swallowing them in drinks exposes delicate tissues in your mouth, throat, and stomach to 100% pure, concentrated plant compounds. Over time, this undiluted exposure can cause severe irritation and inflammation.
🌿 They are hyper-concentrated: Pure essential oils are incredibly potent plant extracts (just one drop of peppermint oil, for instance, is equivalent to dozens of cups of peppermint tea!). When ingested, all those heavy plant compounds hit your bloodstream at once, putting unnecessary stress on your liver.
🌿 The TGA reality check: In Australia, making claims about ingesting essential oils for health benefits is strictly regulated by the TGA. In fact, if you look at the official TGA compliance reports for large MLM companies, out of their entire catalogue of single oils, only about 4 to 6 specific oils actually carry an official ORAL USE direction (and even those come with strict maximum dosage limits and mandatory TGA warning labels). The vast majority of their oils are listed for Aromatic or Topical use only—just like ours!
At Oil4you, all of our oils are 100% pure, and many in our range are organic. But regardless, we never encourage ingesting them—not because of their quality, but because your body's safety matters far more to us than following a social media trend.
Pure essential oils do their absolute best, safest work when enjoyed the way nature intended: through gentle inhalation in a diffuser or diluted safely into a carrier oil for your skin. 🌸
