Welcome back to Trial Talk Tuesday. Last week we looked at what happens to participants after a study wraps up, and this week we’ll talk about the drug.
Immediately after the trial closes, all collected data enters a rigorous analysis period. What happens next with the drug depends on the trial phase:
Phase I: Researchers analyse initial safety and dosage data to decide if the treatment is safe enough to move to Phase II.
Phase II: Researchers evaluate the drug for clinical efficacy. If it shows clear evidence of working, it earns a spot in large-scale Phase III trials.
Phase III: Comprehensive safety and effectiveness data are compiled and submitted to health regulators (like the FDA or TGA) for formal approval and market release.
Phase IV: Already approved and available to the public, real-world data from everyday patients are continually tracked to monitor long-term safety.
Whether a drug advances or stops, every completed phase provides crucial scientific answers that shape the future of healthcare.
