For me exercise has been so much more than weight, fitness and strength - even though that’s what I started out wanting improvements in. It’s one of the most powerful things you can do for your brain. 🧠And in midlife, it’s starts to become a more important conversation.
When you exercise, you stimulate BDNF — a protein that supports brain health, learning, memory and neuroplasticity (your brain’s ability to adapt and form new connections).
Research has even shown that regular aerobic exercise can increase the volume of the hippocampus — the part of your brain involved in learning and memory.
The way you move today can influence how well your brain functions as you age.
And for me, it’s a pretty compelling reason to keep doing it. I also encourage my clients to not be too perfectionist about it and just try to move more consistently. Let’s face it, personal bests are wonderful goals but life sometimes has other plans for us at this age.
But here’s a question: Do you actually know where your fitness stands today?
That’s why I created Know Your Numbers — to help you understand the health and performance measures that matter as you age, and why knowing your starting point can change what you do next. It can help you to prioritise your unique health position so you do what’s going to move the needle first.
