A positive homebirth transfer

In the early hours of the morning Tracy started surging at 38 weeks pregnant with her first baby, by 6am her partner Gareth called to say that Tracy was feeling pretty concerned that her baby hadn't been moving. I headed round for an assessment and quite quickly it was apparent that the safest place for us to be was in hospital. We arrived at hospital, Tracy was surging beautifully and we received a warm welcome from the staff, Tracy was soon back in the zone. After a few hours of being there and bub still showing some signs of distress, Tracy agreed to an examination, which showed that she was around 6cm dilated, I think everyone was a little shocked as Tracy was so controlled and peaceful, working with her surges. We managed to find an inflatable pool and create a "home like" environment as much as possible. There was still concern for the baby and the hospital staff continued working collaboratively, giving recommendations and giving Tracy & Gareth the space and time to consider all of their options. It was clear that Tracy was close to meeting her baby, the surges becoming stronger and Tracy bearing down spontaneously. It didn't take long for us to start seeing a little head, making their way down, rocking back and forwards. Tracy was not impressed with how excited we were about seeing the tiniest bit of head 😂 but we knew just how close she was. After only 6 hours of arriving at the hospital, Tracy birthed her beautiful baby girl, on the floor, physiologically, just as her and Gareth had hoped for. Little Erin needed some support after being born, but was quickly reunited for lots of skin to skin and cuddles, where she hasn't really left in 8 weeks! Transferring to hospital does not alway mean saying goodbye to physiological birth, a beautiful calm environment can still be created. So much of this was down to the beautiful midwives at RHW who were so willing to collaborate & support, it really made all the difference - the beautiful student midwife that was with us also made some placenta prints, how cool! What an incredible birth to be apart of, Tracy, Gareth & Erin you are the best ❤️

**Soppy post incoming** swipe for some funny photos

Happy birthday to my incredible husband, who just so happens to steal my thunder every year on International Day of The Midwife 😂 - I think that it is rather apt that you were born on this day, as I would not be the midwife that I am today without you by my side. You have been there from the very start of my midwifery training, 13 years ago 😮. You were never perturbed by the anatomical diagrams of va**nas all over my bedroom walls, the stories of birthing women, you helped me revise emergency scenarios and now know exactly how to handle a shoulder dystocia, you picked me up from shifts so I didn't have to walk in the dark and you always wanted to hear all about my day. What is so special about having you with me throughout all of these years is that you understand my job inside out, something that very little people actually do - it means when I have a hard day that I can come home and debrief and you know what I am talking about and how to support me. You have pushed and supported me to follow my passion of homebirth and continuity of care and given me the time and space to follow my passions regardless of how this affects you - for exampl, also getting woken up in the middle of the night when my phone rings! I am so grateful for the silly notes when we haven't seen eachother in days, the home cooked meals, the helpful reminders like telling me I need to register a birth and your genuine excitement when a woman has the birth she'd hoped for. I truly would be lost without you and half the midwife that I am today. I am very happy to share this day with you, my honorary midwifery sidekick ❤️

* Disclaimer, the suturing photo is of a chicken breast, not an actual va**na. This was also about 12 years ago as a student, I'm a lot better I promise 😂😂

The birth of baby Symphony, a very fitting name, as so many parts had to fall into place for her arrival into the world. This Symphony was conducted by her beautiful parents Echo, Luke & furry sister Maple🐶

Echo & Luke moved to Sydney in the later stages of pregnancy and we clicked as soon as we met. Echo had her heart set on a homebirth, in her own space with as little intervention as possible.  Baby Symphony briefly had other plans and did a last minute flip to breech at 38 weeks! Echo tried everything, moxa, acupuncture, inversion upon inversion - luckily our local hospital is supportive of breech & Echo decided on an ECV, which worked straight away! Little Symphony was one step closer.

Several days later Echo's waters released - days passed with no signs of labour, Echo & Luke kept the positivity flowing & held strong. With daily check ups, and reassurance, Echo began to feel surges around 70 hours later! After all that waiting, Echo & Symphony were ready and labour rocketed on. Luke & Maple supported Echo through her surges, with Echo wanting constant abdominal lifts, Luke really regretted going to the gym that day 😂.

Symphony made her way into the world just as the year of the fire horse ticked over. She was born in the water, and then straight to her mum's chest, where she has barely left for 8 weeks! What an honour it was to witness this transformation of two people becoming parents - Echo overcame every hurdle with such grace and strength, and she wholeheartedly trusted in her body's ability to birth her baby.  A privilege as always ❤️

Holding space is such a crucial thing during labour and birth. As a midwife it is important to know when to sit on your hands and quietly, unobtrusively observe. This is when we often see birth unfold in its truest form.

Leti returned to The Nesting Hub to have her 4th baby, after birthing her 3rd baby at home with Gail & Kate. Leti felt confident and trusting of her body to birth her baby, and she was seeking another empowering, uninterrupted birth.

Leti spontaneously laboured at 38 weeks, taking us all by surprise. However, very conveniently starting labour prior to rush hour traffic, Gail and I made our way to Campbelltown, excited to welcome Leti's baby earthside.

Leti was surrounded by her 3 children, who were offering words of support and the occasional question "Mummy why are you making those noises?", "Mummy, can I have a snack", Leti who is used to 3 little people chatting away took it all in her stride. Partner Rich was rushing around filling pools and making snacks, quietly supporting Leti. Leti listened to her body and started to feel the urge to push, making her way into the pool where she settled in and let go. As Leti became more vocal, Gail and I came closer, offering words of support where needed but not bringing Leti out of labour land. Before long Leti was reaching down and bringing up her beautiful boy, he had a quick cry and then settled onto his mother's chest and was shortly greeted by his 3 VERY excited siblings. It was such a calm and precious moment, watching this family blossom and grow. I truly hope that we held the space for you Leti and that this birth was everything you had envisioned, how special to have Gail attend your birth once again, thank you for trusting me to fill such big midwife shoes.

What fun we had that day, it felt like a celebration after, the kids bouncing with excitement and asking about every detail that was unfolding, including asking continuously if they could see the "meat basket" (placenta) 😂, that's not one I will forget.

Leti, if baby number 5 decides to make an appearance, The Nesting Hub would love to hold space for you again.

Belle, Brayden and Baby Nyla 👶🏡

It truly is a privilege to look after any woman and her family during such a special time in their lives, but being asked to care for a midwife, and a friend, really does feel like that extra special honour. Being trusted to provide care in this life changing journey is not something to take for granted, so thank you Bella & Brayden, it truly was such a midwifery highlight to support you.

Belle managed to switch off her midwife brain and trust in her body, no matter what the situation threw at her (quite a lot 😂), it is pretty cool that the first homebirth Belle ever attended was her own!

Brayden, took everything in his stride and supported Belle with everything he had, it was amazing to witness and now I think he might be the biggest advocate for homebirth I have ever met!!

Belle powered through an intense labour and birthed baby Nyla with so much control, however, possibly in the strangest superman-esque position I have ever seen 😂🦸‍♀️. Baby Nyla was showered with love instantly and that has only flourished and continued as the weeks have gone by.

As I have now discharged this beautiful family I reflect back on the journey and it really does not feel like work at all. It is so refreshing to discharge women who express such positivity and gratitude for their experience. At almost eight weeks postpartum, my role truly feels complete — and these women have a solid foundation to confidently embrace the next challenges of parenthood.
