As Nature Intended Animal Health Advocate, researcher and Creator of As Nature Intended Community Group - Holistic Natural Resource and Support Network

Natural Animal Health Advocate. Founder of As Nature Intended Community Network - Support and Resource Portal since 2014. I've been passionate about encouraging and inspiring pet parents to achieve their full potential while staying proactive, empowering themselves with knowledge so they can make well informed decisions. If we're to truly engage in promoting longevity in our pets as a whole, then being their best advocate is a step towards achieving longevity. I believe that honest brands and high-quality ingredients are critical to the success of our pets' health and our own health. I only endorse products and services which I use or would use myself from professionals who stand by their brand. My background has been retail management, Graphic Design, Creative and commercial Art, Wildlife Rehabilitator and mother. Raised on a large farm with many animals and always loved having lots of pets. My inspiration has been my 3 dogs Lilly a golden YOB: 2010, joint ownership. Missy Shih Tzu 2012-2024 and Monty her son YOB: 2015. When Lilly came into my life, I made a promise that I would do everything I can to help prevent her from developing cancer. Thats when my research started and it has continued. All raw fed from puppies, Monty was weaned onto raw and has been raised as close to nature as possible. When Lilly's part owner was diagnosed with cancer, my research and education expanded. The rest is history and an experience I won't ever forget

๐Ÿถ DO YOU KNOW WHAT'S REALLY BEHIND YOUR PET'S FOOD LABEL? ๐Ÿพ

Pet food regulations can be complicated, and many pet parents may not know the rules that govern the products they feed their beloved companions.

But being an informed pet parent means looking beyond the packaging and understanding the bigger picture.

๐ŸŒฟ It's time to test your knowledge!

Truth About Pet Food has put together a quiz to challenge what you know about pet food regulations.

๐Ÿ“ Take the quiz, link on comments..

How much do you know? You might discover something worth investigating further!

At As Nature Intended, we believe education is an essential part of advocating for our pets. The more we learn, the better equipped we are to ask questions and make informed decisions.

๐Ÿ’ง WHAT'S REALLY IN YOUR TAP WATER?

๐ŸŒฟ An important environmental health conversation for people AND their pets.

We pay attention to the food we eat, the products we use and the chemicals we try to avoid in our homes. But how often do we stop to consider the water flowing from our kitchen tap?

A recent Australian news article has brought this question back into focus โ€” and it's one worth exploring. ๐Ÿ’ง

WA was one of the worst!!
Happy to share link in comments.

๐Ÿšฉ THE CONCERN: PFAS & OTHER CONTAMINANTS

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a large group of synthetic chemicals used in products such as non-stick cookware, waterproof fabrics, food packaging and firefighting foams.

They're often called forever chemicalsโ€ because many persist in the environment for a long time and can accumulate under certain conditions.

Depending on the water source and local circumstances, drinking water may also contain other substances that warrant investigation.

๐Ÿพ AND WHAT ABOUT OUR PETS?

Our dogs and cats drink the water we provide every day. They share our homes and are exposed to many of the same environmental factors we are.

Yet water quality isn't always something we think to investigate when considering our pets' long-term wellbeing.

๐ŸŒฑ SO, WHAT CAN WE DO?

Rather than assuming our water is either perfectly safe or dangerously contaminated, we can take a more informed approach:

๐Ÿ’ง Find out where your household water comes from.

๐Ÿ”Ž Check available water-quality reports for your local area or water supplier.

๐Ÿงช Where appropriate, consider testing for specific contaminants relevant to your water source.

๐Ÿšฐ Remember that boiling water does not remove PFAS and may concentrate some contaminants as water evaporates.

๐ŸŒฟ If considering filtration, research which contaminants a system has been independently tested and certified to reduce. Different filters remove different substances, so one solution won't necessarily address every concern.

Knowledge is the first step towards making informed choices.

We cannot eliminate every environmental exposure, nor do we need to live in fear of them. But understanding what we're exposed to can help us make more considered decisions for our own wellbeing and the health of the animals who depend on us.

๐Ÿ’š Prevention isn't just about the choices we make today; it's also about preparing for tomorrow.

๐Ÿพ YOUR TURN: Have you ever had your household water tested, or researched the quality of the water you and your pets drink? We'd love to hear about your experiences.
I had an instance where this white cloudy stuff kept rising up off my water. That was the final straw for me and I went and purchsed a tap filter. Its brilliant, wish i invested in one years ago. It's affortable and effective!

Two Issues in Pet Food That Are Not Monitored

๐Ÿพ PET FOOD REGULATION: ARE WE REALLY GETTING THE ASSURANCES WE THINK WE ARE?

When we buy food for our dogs and cats, we naturally expect that whatโ€™s printed on the label reflects whatโ€™s actually in the bag or tin โ€” and that the food provides the nutrients our pets need.

But how much independent verification is taking place?

An article Iโ€™m sharing raises some important questions about pet food regulation, including the monitoring of nutritional adequacy claims, ingredient labelling and the extent of routine testing carried out by regulatory authorities.

It also highlights concerns about pet food recalls involving vitamin and mineral imbalances, as well as research that has identified undeclared ingredients in some tested products.

๐Ÿ’ก This raises an important question: how much are we relying on manufacturers to police themselves?

For pet parents, this is about more than choosing a brand based on its reputation, marketing or claims on the packaging. Itโ€™s about transparency, accountability and knowing what we are feeding our pets.

๐Ÿ• What can you do?

โœ”๏ธ Ask pet food manufacturers what routine testing they conduct on their ingredients and finished products.

โœ”๏ธ Find out whether they participate in independent third-party audits.

โœ”๏ธ Look beyond the marketing and ask questions about quality control and transparency.

โœ”๏ธ Stay informed and make decisions based on evidence, not just advertising.

At As Nature Intended, we believe that informed pet parents are better equipped to advocate for their animals. Understanding how pet food is regulated is an important part of that journey.

As always, I encourage you to read the original source, explore the information presented and draw your own conclusions.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Have you ever asked a pet food manufacturer about its testing and quality-control procedures?
I'd be interested to hear about your experiences.

๐Ÿพ WE'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM AUSTRALIAN SENIOR-DOG PET PARENTS
What changes have you noticed in your dog as they've grown older?

We're exploring Senior Dogs: Treats, Chews & Changing Needs as part of our ongoing work developing educational resources for the As Nature Intended community.

We're interested in the real-world experience of living with senior dogs โ€” including changes in chewing ability, food preferences, the ways treats and chews are used, and the many factors that influence the choices we make for an individual dog.
Because choosing something for a senior dog isn't necessarily as simple as:
โ€œThey're old, so they need soft treats.โ€

Every dog is an individualโ€ฆ.
Breed, size, dental history, chewing ability, preferences, purpose, lifestyle and many other factors can all form part of the picture.

And sometimes the best thing we can do is simply listen to what our dog is telling us.

We're conducting a short survey to learn more about the experiences of Australian senior-dog guardians.

The information gathered will help us develop future ANI educational resources, including our Oral & Dental Health Series.

๐Ÿพ Australian senior-dog guardians โ€” we'd love your input.
It takes approximately 5โ€“7 minutes:

As our dogs age, their needs, preferences and abilities can change โ€” sometimes gradually, sometimes quite unexpectedly. I'm interested in learning from Australian pet parents who live with senior dogs (7+) and purchase dehydrated treats or chews online. How you use treats, chews and other food pro...
