Door2 vs FBT.

A conversation about how we approach eating disorder treatment, and what recovery can look like when we move beyond compliance, control and behaviour.

At Door2, we believe recovery is about understanding the whole person.

Different brains.
Different needs.
Different pathways.

Recovery TO someone → Recovery WITH them.
Compliance → Connection.
Restore the body → Restore the whole person.

This is Rethinking Recovery.

What would you change about the way mainstream eating disorder treatment approaches people whose brains don’t fit the “standard” pathway?

10/10/2026

We’re not usually ones for awareness days or campaigns.
Because awareness alone doesn’t change much if we’re still not listening to the people living it.

But this year’s World Mental Health Day theme really hits home.
“Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change.”At Door2, we know that listening is only the beginning.

If we're not recognising what someone is experiencing, how can we expect to understand what they need?
This matters deeply in eating disorder treatment, where the person behind the behaviours can so easily be missed.
Their neurotype. Their experience. What feels safe. What’s happening beneath the surface.

Lived experience shouldn't just be invited into the conversation. It should help shape what happens next.
Help us share this message this World Mental Health day, and every day after that.

There are some things you won’t hear at Door2.

“Just comply.”
“Stop being difficult.”
“Take control.”
“Just follow the plan.”

Because we believe there’s a better question: What’s happening underneath?

Different brains. Different needs. Different pathways. That’s where recovery begins.

What do you wish the mainstream system understood?

What happens when helping your child recover means becoming their enemy?

At Door2, parents and carers aren't the enforcers of recovery.
They're part of the support team.

Because your child needs someone beside them, not another person standing over them.

Recovery works better when connection stays in the room.

Physical recovery matters.
But it is not the whole story.

Someone can be eating while still struggling enormously on the inside.

At Door2, we look beyond the behaviour to the whole person - their neurotype, relationships, environment, identity and lived experience.

Because recovery isn't just about restoring a body.
It's about restoring a life.

Physical recovery is important. But it’s not the finish line.
At Door2, we look beyond behaviour to understand the whole person; their neurotype, nervous system, relationships, environment and lived experience.

We don’t just ask, “Are they eating?”

We ask, “What is happening for this person - and what do they need to recover?”

Because restoring the body is part of recovery, but 'Restoring a life is the goal'.

Someone can comply with a treatment plan without feeling safe in it.

They can do what they're asked.
They can follow the plan.
They can say yes.

But compliance doesn't tell us what is happening underneath. Connection does.

At Door2, connection isn't an optional extra. It's part of the work.
Because recovery isn't about getting someone to comply.

It's about helping someone feel safe enough to participate in their own recovery.

New Episode of 'Inside Door2' out now on Spotify - The Messy Middle of Eating Disorder Recovery:

Recovery is often talked about as though wanting to recover should be enough. But what happens when you desperately want your life back — and yet another part of you is screaming just as loudly to stay exactly where you are?

In this episode 18-year-old Lucy finds herself deep in the messy middle of eating disorder recovery. With the final weeks of secondary school approaching and so much of life waiting on the other side, surely now should be the time to be motivated to recover… right?

Except recovery isn't that simple.

Lucy can see the life she wants. She can feel frustrated by being stuck. She can desperately want to move forward. And yet she describes another part of herself — her Negative Mind demanding attention.

So how do you trust yourself when your own voice can so easily be overwhelmed by the voice of the NM?

And how do you make decisions about recovery when different parts of you want completely different things?

Alongside Lucy is her mum, Alison, who has made an enormous shift in the way she supports her daughter. Moving away from the anxiety-driven certainty of FBT approaches and the belief that she needed to make recovery happen, Alison has learned to **meet Lucy where she is**.

Together, Lucy and Alison explore what it means to stay connected through uncertainty rather than trying to force an outcome.

This is a conversation about being stuck without being hopeless, wanting recovery without yet being ready for every part of it, learning to distinguish the Self from the NM, and discovering that sometimes the most powerful thing a carer can do is stop trying to win the battle and start helping their loved one hear their own voice again.

Because the messy middle isn't necessarily a failure of recovery.

Sometimes, it is where the real work of finding yourself begins.
