As a crab grows, at some point it has to shed its outer shell because it can’t evolve and over time becomes too slow. The shedding is necessary but not easy - it leaves the crab more vulnerable. But it also allows the new shell to grow - one that will fit perfectly.

I find that a similar process occurs when we grow through transitions. We need to let go of certain patterns, activities, even relationships, if we’ve outgrown them and if they cannot evolve together with us. It may leave us more vulnerable and insecure, but it will create the space for something new to grow.

At the beginning of a transition it can be hard to know in which direction you want to go.
And when you see other people’s achievements, it is easy to feel pressure to catch up — applying for jobs that do not fit, saying yes to projects you do not want, or forcing yourself into strategies that work for someone else.

It looks like action. But often, it is a way of avoiding the harder question: what do I actually want?

You do not need to follow someone else’s path. You need to create your own.

If you are navigating a transition and need support finding your direction, book a free discovery session through the link in my bio.

𝗜𝗳 𝗜 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽, 𝗜’𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱

I’ve been thinking about how often we feel the urge to act simply because we’ve seen someone else doing it. A new certification, a new project or a promotion appears on our screen, and suddenly our own plans feel too small and the list of things we should be doing grows a little longer.

This script of constant doing and keeping up rarely feels like a belief we could question. It feels like urgency, and I think much of it is our body looking for safety in a world that seems to be moving faster than we are.

So when that pull to catch up comes, I’d invite you to pause and ask yourself whether you’re choosing this, or trying to quiet the fear of being left behind.

In which area of life does it come up most often for you?

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱

Most of what we believe about work, we never heard as advice. We picked it up as children, watching the adults around us: how they spoke about their jobs at the dinner table, whether they ever rested, what they put up with, and what they gave up for the family or for their work.

These scripts were passed on with love, and most of them kept our families safe in the world they lived in. Because we absorbed them so early, they tend to show up in the body before the mind can explain them: the guilt when you rest, the tight chest before you ask for more, the pull to stay where you are because you’ve learnt this is how it has to be.

Noticing them is the first step to rewriting those scripts.

Think of one important adult in your life when you were a child, how they approached their work and their career. . Do you notice any similarities to your own approach? I’d love to read your answers in the comments.

(Part 1, on the career scripts society hands us, is on my profile.)

I went looking for what the research says about the scripts society hands us, and how they shape the paths we take. Some of it surprised me, and some of it confirmed what I often hear from the women I work with: many of the rules we follow most faithfully were never ours to begin with.

❓Which of the scripts is the most familiar to you? Share in comments.

Next, I’ll look at the scripts that come from closer to home, the ones we absorb in our families. In the meantime, swipe through and tell me which one sounds familiar.

Career scripts are the beliefs we carry about our professional lives, that might not be true or helpful. But they became part of who we are somewhere along the way, so we carry them on.

For example, a successful career is constant vertical progression.
Or, being a creative means low income.
Or, being a woman leader means you have to act like a man.
What’s yours?

People do not think about you nearly as much as you think they do.
And honestly, it’s a relief. When you imagine what others will think, what they might answer, when you anticipate a rejection before even asking… it’s all a story that the mind comes up with to protect you from the pain of a possible rejection. What it’s missing is that there are many different possibilities.
If you want to change the narrative in your mind, book a free discovery call. Link in bio.

Self-regulation looks different for everyone. For some it’s slowing down and breathing, for others it’s high-energy activities. Even for the same person it can look very different depending on the current state.
Check out a few suggestions in this carousel.
Is there one you’ve never tried!

If you think: “I don’t think big enough, if only I had a big dream or a big goal, it would be so much easier to move forward.”

In reality, having a big dream is never enough. You can only move in its direction if you have concrete, manageable steps, clear actions that you do regularly.

If your dream only exists in your head, it will not become reality by itself.

❓What is a small step you can take towards that dream already today?
