War doesn’t end when the fighting stops. For many veterans and displaced people, it stays with them: in sleepless nights, in memories that won’t fade, in a feeling of being disconnected from who they used to be.

🗣️ Talking about it isn’t always possible. Trauma often isn’t stored in words, and speaking about the worst moments of a life can feel overwhelming. Art offers another way in.

🎨 Instead of describing trauma out loud, people can place it outside of themselves, onto paper or canvas. Seeing an experience take shape, rather than reliving it, is far less confronting. It helps the body and mind calm down and eases the constant state of alert so many survivors live in.

🧩 Traumatic memories are often fragmented: an image, a sound, a feeling, with no clear story attached. Creating engages the senses and the imagination, and helps connect those scattered pieces with understanding, step by step, in a safe and controlled way.

🌱 Art therapy doesn’t replace traditional therapy. It complements it, opening a door that words alone sometimes can’t.

🤝 That is the idea behind the project: an integrated European perspective on art therapy in contexts of war, displacement and trauma. Designed as a pedagogical, clinical and political tool, it brings together theory, practical protocols and contemporary perspectives to help professionals and institutions offer people affected by conflict a safe space to express, to heal, and to rebuild trust.
