On September 21, 1981, Belize became an independent nation after more than a century of British colonial rule. Our journey to independence was shaped by the determination of Belizeans who worked for self-government and national sovereignty.

Since then, Belize has continued to grow as a proud, peaceful, multicultural nation,home to people of many backgrounds, languages, traditions, and cultures. From the Caribbean Sea to our Maya Mountains, rivers, forests, and vibrant communities, our greatest strength has always been our people and our shared love for Belize. 🇧🇿

Today, we celebrate where we came from, how far we've come, and the Belize we continue to build for generations to come.

Belize vs. Costa Rica, Mexico & Panama -what buyers don't always know:

🇧🇿 Belize -Foreigners get the exact same fee-simple ownership rights as citizens, with no restricted coastal zones and no waiting periods; the old "Alien Landholding" licence requirement was scrapped back in 2001. Belize allows non-citizens to purchase property outright with full freehold ownership, with the same rights as citizens and no requirement for local partners or trust structures. And it comes with real tax perks: Belize has no capital gains tax, no inheritance tax, and low property tax.

🇨🇷 Costa Rica -The first 50 meters from the coast are public land, and the next 150 meters often need a concession or corporate structure. A capital gains tax generally applies on sales.

🇲🇽 Mexico -Most beach destinations sit inside the "restricted zone" (within 50km of the coast or 100km of the border). Foreigners hold title through a bank trust (fideicomiso) or a Mexican corporation, not directly.

🇵🇦 Panama -Foreigners can generally buy with the same rights as locals, though confirming clean titled land outside the major cities can take extra diligence.

Bottom line: Belize remains one of the simplest, most transparent places in the region to own land as a foreigner.

Jenny’s Better in Belize Build -Eco Community -Part 4

From the plans to the land!

Now things are getting really exciting!

With the necessary areas of the hillside cleared, the team is ready to start laying out Jenny’s new home.

Stakes are being placed and measurements are being marked to show exactly where the house will sit. And there it is - Jenny’s house plan and design, coming to life right there on the hillside!

It’s amazing to see how the vision on paper begins to take shape on the actual land. Every measurement and placement brings Jenny one step closer to seeing her new home become a reality.

And, as always, the natural landscape remains an important part of the design , working with the land rather than simply building on it.

Follow along as we continue this journey with Jenny and Mr. Chan’s team.

Save the date as we celebrate our Independence on September 21, 2026, at Marshalleck Cancha.

The official ceremonies start at 3:30 PM, followed by the citizen parade. Starting at the Cancha on Kennedy Street, Wyatt Street, George Price Blvd., Baron Bliss St., Churchill St., George Price Highway onto Wyatt Street, and ending at Marshalleck Cancha.

Register your floats at 637-7069 with Mr. Ricky Cunil for the Citizens Parade on September 21, 2026.

We also remind torch runners that applications to participate in this year’s torch run are available at the Benque Viejo Town Council. If you’re under 18, you must get your parents to sign the authorization and disclaimer form.
