The first few flakes of snow today and our Anna was whipping out the Christmas decorations and the Residents were happy to give their suggestions and opinions. They sure know how to cheer a place up with snowmen, Santa, some bright lights and LOTS of snow!

Please take a moment and consider supporting this worthy cause! Home Hospice North Lanark is holding a Tree Fundraiser - what a wonderful gift this would be for someone you love or even a gift for yourself! A beautiful way to commemorate someone you may have lost and in the process support a very worth cause and organization in our community.

What a beautiful gesture to honour all those lost to COVID

***The following note is from Karen Thompson, faithful volunteer and supporter of our home as well as former family member. Karen lost her Mother Mae to COVID this past Spring.

***I first heard about the “Covid 19 Memorial Blanket” on CBC. They directed me to the website “Covid 19 Memorial Blanket”. From there l registered my Mom, gave a small history about her, then went ahead and knit her square.

The blanket is being assembled by volunteers in Fenelon Falls, Ont.
On the website there is a pattern and yarn type to use. All the squares will be 12” x 12”.

This is a picture of Peppy and myself with the squares l knit for my Mom and his mom, Suzie. ***

Well it has been quite some time since we posted anything on FB but it is time to come out of our COVID hibernation and share some fun stuff with everyone! Our outbreak was declared over on June 29th and we are all working to adjust to our “new normal”...we can’t have dining room service or activities the way we used to but we still know how to have fun 🤗

Joanne just happened to pick up her shiny new red scooter on June 30th and we convinced her to bring it inside and show all of our Residents on Canada Day!

Everyone loved it ❤️❤️...if you see Joanne out and about Almonte, give her a wave!

We continue to be overwhelmed by the kindness and generousity of our community! One of these days we are going to write the longest post EVER with lots of pictures but for tonight, we just wanted to share our fun from last evening...our staff enjoyed a delicious meal from Mama's Place here in Almonte courtesy of our friends at Neilcorp - thank you Neilcorp! Chicken wings and strips, zucchini and mozza sticks, deep fried pickles, onion rings and party bread! Sometimes a little grease is good for the soul!

Thank you so much for the magazine donations!! We are near our limit for now but may put out another request so please keep watching ❤️

04/03/2020

Thank you!! We have enough now thanks to your kindness!! ❤️❤️

Do you have any spare magazines or picture books sitting around in your home that you would be willing to donate? We would greatly appreciate magazines for our Residents such as National Geographic, Gardening, Home, Gossip etc. If you have any you can part with, please set them at our front door on the red chair, ring the doorbell and then step away so our greeter can bring them in.

Thanking you in advance for your kindness - this will greatly cheer up our Residents!

Dear Friends, Family & Community Members of Almonte Country Haven,

We apologize for our late update as we had hoped to get this posted for you much sooner. As you can imagine, we are at full running pace inside the hallways of our home. The lives of our Residents and our staff have greatly changed as this is our first time ever navigating the waters of a full facility isolation period with all 82 of our Residents confined to their bedrooms.

Our “new normal” has its difficulties but our Residents are managing well, and our staff have risen to the challenge. Staff, from all departments, are working together to ensure timely delivery of 82 trays to each Resident room. Everyone in the home has come together with a focus on our Residents’ care and safety, enhanced cleaning measures as well as practicing proper infection control procedures in a strong effort to contain and minimize any further spread.

Due to the size of our home and the proximity of all inside, staff from every department have a very intimate understanding of our Residents. They are very cognizant of our Residents’ mental well-being and we are monitoring all Residents closely. The Public Health has released a new directive and we are now taking each Residents’ temperature twice daily, even those not currently affected by respiratory symptoms.

We continue to work closely with and appreciate the support and guidance of our partners within our OMNI family, the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark Public Health Unit, the Ministry of Long-Term Care, the Ministry of Labour, Almonte General Hospital and others.

We have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity of our community. Your messages filled with kind thoughts and prayers as well as your door drop off donations of t.v. trays, gloves, masks etc. has been uplifting to our spirits and the show of support that our staff need to be fueled on during this unprecedented time.

We have discovered, that as we are doing our best to focus on our Residents, we are simply unable to respond to all emails, phone calls, questions etc. in a timely fashion. We understand people’s feelings of helplessness and concern and we do want to address this, but we ask that you consider that all time managing this significant task, is time that we aren’t directly spending with our Residents to manage their needs. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Please understand that it is our responsibility and duty to our Residents’ and their right to confidentiality, to provide information solely with their Power of Attorney for Care. From there, we are respectfully requesting that each Residents’ POA communicate this information with their family members.
Yes! You can drop items off for your loved one – please place them in a box or bag and ring the doorbell prior to 7:30 p.m. each day. Our greeter will bring these items inside. We will then deliver these goodies to your loved one. We know that these care parcels are brightening many Residents’ days so please keep them coming!

We are hoping that as of next week we will be able to work on setting up some further FaceTime chats and Facebook Video conferencing between Residents and their loved ones. Quite frankly, at this moment we can’t manage this, but our Life Enrichment Department is working on a plan to arrange a few calls, each day, starting next week.

We thank you for your continued support, kind thoughts and prayers. Please do your part in the community – practice social distancing, stay home as much as possible, love your families and stay healthy!

We are heartbroken to share this news with our families and our community.

The Leeds, Grenville & Lanark District Health Unit

We are heartbroken to share this news with our families and our community.

It is with sadness that the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit reports that two older people, a man and a woman, with underlying health problems living in the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark area have died from infection with COVID-19. The man was living at the Almonte Country Haven Home, and the woman was living at home and died at the Queensway Carleton hospital. The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit is following up close contacts of the individuals. For more info: https://bit.ly/2WTT4ts

COVID-19 OUTBREAK NEWS:

The evening of March 28th we were informed by Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Public Health Unit that we have three Residents that have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. Our “unknown” Respiratory outbreak is now deemed a COVID-19 Outbreak. Our number one priority is the safety and care of our Residents as well as the containment and prevention of further spread of the virus. We are working closely with our partners at the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Public health Unit, the Ministry of Long-Term Care and the Almonte General Hospital as well as many other resources.

We realize that this news raises a multitude of questions, concerns and uncertainties. We are respectfully requesting that you call the Public Health Unit for further information, unless your question is specifically related to your loved one. As previously communicated to our families, you can also visit www.omniway.ca where you will see a “COVID-19 Update” tab. From there you will find links to the following websites: Ministry of Health Ontario, Public Health Ontario, World Health Organization and the Government of Canada. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding in responding to your calls as we have entered unchartered waters for our home and our main focus is our Residents and how we can care for them through a facility wide isolation period.

Working together with Public Health, we have made the difficult decision to isolate every Resident to their room in an effort to prevent further spread for the safety of staff and Residents. For the first time ever, we will be delivering full meal service to 82 Residents, with a variety of dietary and feeding-assistance requirement needs in their bedrooms. We are taking every measure possible through Resident isolation and proper use of full Personal Protective Equipment by all of our staff.

We will provide updates as possible.

It was like watching an episode of Lucy & Ethel baking today - cookies flying out of the oven faster than the Residents could catch them! Ray and Iola baked with Megan - and everyone enjoyed, even saw some staff who couldn't really talk but they were probably just chewing gum 😉

I have worked in long-term care for 29 years and today I witnessed by far one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. Due to COVID-19 we have had to close our doors to all visitors. This is scary and isolating for both our Residents and their families 😢. We have no Residents exhibiting any symptoms and we are doing everything we can to keep life as normal as possible at the Haven.

From my office today, I noticed two people standing in our garden area singing. Jane and her son were standing at Jane’s Mother’s window - the window was slightly open and on the other side Eileen sat in her chair listening to her family sing an Irish melody to her while they enjoyed a glass of whiskey ❤️ I consider myself blessed every day to serve my Residents and today, this beautiful display of love and connections just reaffirmed to me that I have chosen the best line of work possible ❤️

The activities staff today took the "Irish Pub Party" to the road and celebrated with Resident's along the way up and down the corridors much to the delight of all - 2 carts loaded with Irish music, green liquids and lots of tasty treats. Residents enjoyed the Shenanigan’s, only thing missing was Anna's famous River Dance, she's on holidays but we know she'll come back in the door 'a dancin next week....Happy St. Patrick's Day to all................

Urgent Update Regarding Visitation at the Haven...
Effective immediately we have had to make the difficult decision to close the doors of Almonte Country Haven to all visitors based on the clear direction of Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer. He has issued a mandate that all Long-term care homes and Retirement residences cease allowing visitors immediately. We have called all families and made them aware of this directive. We understand that this is disconcerting and it increases feelings of anxiety and isolation for both our Residents and their loved ones. We want to assure you that we the staff of ACH will do everything we can to provide exceptional care to our Residents during this difficult time and will be increasing the activity offerings within the home to assist in combatting the negative impact this may have for our elderly. We thank you for your cooperation and understanding and you are welcome to call the home with questions. Please call Carolyn at ext. #222 or Ruzica at ext. #223 with any questions/comments.

Enhanced COVID-19 Proactive Prevention Practices in Ontario

Effective Immediately, in order to help prevent the introduction of COVID-19 to our home as well as prevent potential spread of the virus, we have begun Active Screening at Almonte Country Haven for all staff and visitors.

You will be greeted by a health care worker at the front entrance to our home and you will be asked the following: are you experiencing a new cough? Shortness of breath or fever? Have you travelled to any affected areas? Have you been in close contact with anyone suspected of having the virus?

We have implemented visiting hours at the Haven – Monday-Friday 3 p.m. – 7 p.m., Weekends 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause but thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we do everything we can to keep our home, our Residents and our staff safe.

Angelika was happy to have lots of help from Residents today bringing out the spring birds and lightening things up. Elva and Gladys were happy to help - and to pose.

Dai Bassett.....Elvis Presley......all this talk about Celebrities in town - the next thing you know you'll be hearing about Cary Grant and the Haven! But seriously, Dai was in recently to entertain - and entertain he did, always very interactive with our Residents and they love it. This time around he had an Elvis Presley set and it was absolutely fantastic - he had us 'All Shook Up' by the end of his performance! Well done, Dai.

Nothing like gathering up some ladies and having finger-lickin' fun food from Mama's Place to kick start the weekend. Of course, Anna & Megan apparently provided the entertainment but sometimes what happens at the Haven - well all I can say is the ladies know when to talk about it and when to keep it in the toe of their shoe!

Valentine's Day was celebrated today at the Haven, starting off with hand made cards from the Almonte Girl Guides & Veterans Canada - thank you! Rachelle and her staff served up Beef Wellington or Shrimp Pasta for lunch - it looked absolutely dreamy! We have several couples here at ACH and they enjoyed lunch with their spouses for this special occasion in a separate room with some extra special attention.
This afternoon Andy & Tony entertained us at our tea, we thank them very, very much for coming in, their generosity is very touching - you talk about giving from the heart - these guys just take it the extra Corkery/Almonte/Cedar Hill mile.
We thank our volunteers and family members who baked and served tea - Nancy, Angela, Dorothy, Arlene, Penny & Linda.
Thank you everyone for helping to make this such a special day for our Residents...........

I heard on the news today there is now a donation page for Country Haven. I would like to donate for all the outstanding care you are providing your clients. Please share your page so more of us can do the same. #canadatogether #canadastrong
Please note that @GroceryHeroCanada will permit staff in active Covid-19 settings to access their platform as health care professionals! They will match staff with community volunteer shoppers who will get their grocery orders to their doorstep! This will help relieve stress of the staff in having to go shopping and potentially expose or be exposed to the virus. It's a win win. Please visit their FB page and encourage your staff to sign up. It would be a good idea to engage the families of those in your care as well as I'm certain they would be willing to provide assistance. We're all in this together. Best of luck and thank you for your work.
Samantha Swayze April 6 at 1:50 PM My sister who is an RN gave me some information that not everyone knows: if you do catch this virus, with most sicknesses we catch resting is key right? Not with this. She said that even tho you feel like absolute crap you have to get up and exercise your lungs. Practice deep breathing, drinking hot beverages, coughing, walking up and down stairs, CPT (percussions on your chest and back to break up mucus), laying in bed and not keeping your lungs moving causes them to fill with fluid which turns into pneumonia it’s been said the ibuprofen for most makes their symptoms worse. Stay hydrated. I hope maybe sharing that info with others can help those who have the virus riding it out at home start feeling better and the exercises keep them from ICU. ❤️
Thinking of you all- staff, residents and families.

My mother asked me to post this message to your page. Please know that her sentiments are held by our entire family. Thank you for the care of my grandfather. ~Vanessa --- My father, Robert Hawkins, passed away recently having lived at Almonte Country Haven for 13 months. The quality of care he received at this most vulnerable time of his life was second to none. The compassion and care given to my visiting elderly mother and myself the same. The atmosphere at the home is warm and welcoming. I found the doctors and nurses personable and compassionate. And so many PSWs with the vocation to care for the elderly as if they were their own family; encouraging, patient and kind. (a little extra cereal at bedtime, that cup of tea in the afternoon, a hug and a few words on the way by) And cleanliness…. That mattered a lot. They fiercely guarded the dignity of my father. The attention to detail by all staff was evident. And many thanks to the staff and volunteers involved in the recreation program. The social events, music, special dinners and homemade baking makes everyone’s eyes light up. I witnessed team work and genuine care and compassion in the most difficult of circumstances (flu season) as well as in the fun and laughter of celebrations The generosity of the staff of Almonte Country Haven is a real testament to them, a blessing to the Country Haven and to the community. I can’t thank them enough for easing my worries and taking over the care for my father. Leslie-Ann Juneau
