Postpartum hair loss is a normal and common event that usually begins around the 4th month after baby is born due to hormone levels dropping. During pregnancy, hormones are elevated, resulting in voluptuous hair with minimal shedding.

These are some of the treatment options available - but most importantly we want to rule out more serious causes such as postpartum thyroiditis and iron deficiency (very common postpartum!).

Be sure to get updated bloodwork done after baby arrives, and reach out if this is something you need support with. 🩷

Bluebell Natural Medicine has donated our January donations to the Cape Breton SPCA. They have been hit especially hard by this record-breaking snowstorm and have had to evacuate from the shelter due to fears of roof collapse.

A portion of every naturopathic visit is donated to animal rescues and other initiatives near and dear to my heart. January was our first month in practice and I am so grateful for the wonderful patients we welcomed at Bluebell 🪻🥰

This is my own vitamin D level from the bloodwork I recently had done. As you can see, I fall in the "likely vitamin D replete" range based on the average population. 64 nmol/L isn't a deficiency and won't get flagged but it's also not optimal. If we are treating low mood, fertility, skin conditions, PCOS, etc etc - we definitely want levels higher than this.

Testing allows us to properly dose vitamin D (test don't guess!). With vitamin D, we don't want too much but we also don't want too little. Now I know what dose to aim for in my vitamin D supplement, which I wouldn't have known without testing.

Find a healthcare provider who is trained in bloodwork interpretation and who can discuss "normal" vs "optimal" values with you. Your health matters 🩷

01/04/2024

Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory condition of the skin that causes increased redness and flushing of the skin along with widened blood vessels and rash-like lesions. There is a big link between rosacea and the health of the gut (the gut-skin axis).

Common triggers for rosacea include alcohol, spicy foods, and sunlight - but there are more less commonly known ones! ☀️🍾

Niacinamide is a hugely popular skincare ingredient these days. It is found in many cleansers, serums, moisturizers - even some treatment masks and sunscreens. The key thing with niacinamide is making sure to not get too much. Most studies that show improvement in skin barrier function use 2-5% niacinamide, yet many products on the market have concentrations of around 10%. Higher concentrations can lead to irritation, redness, and an increase in breakouts. If your skin ever became worse after using The Ordinary's Niacinamide+Zinc - this may be why!

Excess vitamin D supplementation and H. Pylori infection are other less commonly known triggers for rosacea.

If you're struggling with rosacea, there is a lot that can be done to help (both internally + topically) to reduce flare ups 🩷

Exciting practice update for the New Year 🥰

In addition to my in-person practice in Antigonish at Root Cause Health & Wellness Clinic, I am launching a new 100% virtual naturopathic medical practice: Bluebell Natural Medicine 🌿🪻🩺

I will be serving patients throughout Nova Scotia and Alberta, from the comfort of your own home. 🏡 This has been a dream of mine to support those living in rural communities who may not have access to an ND.

To increase accessibility to naturopathic medicine even further, I have a number of dedicated appointment spots each month for those experiencing financial hardship or who identify as low-income. These appointments will be at a greatly reduced rate, as I believe that finances should not be a barrier to accessing healthcare. 💸

And because giving back is so important to me, a portion of every naturopathic visit will be donated to animal rescues and other initiatives in my community and beyond. 🐾🫶

Thank you to all those who have been supporting me, sharing my practice with your friends & family, and allowing me to live out this dream of mine. I love what I do. 🩷🩺

~ Dr. Emily

*Bookings are now open at the link below!

*For more details about reduced rate appointments for lower-income individuals or those experiencing financial hardship, please email me at [email protected] - these spots must be reserved manually by me as there is a limited number each month.

Happy Holidays everyone!🎄

One thing I love about naturopathic medicine is the time I get to spend with my patients.

There is no "one issue per visit" in naturopathic medicine.

In our initial visit together, we spend 60 mins going over your entire health history. I will ask you questions you may have never been asked before. This detective work allows me to get to the root cause of your concerns. 🕵️‍♀️

A "one issue per visit" model of healthcare has its limitations. It's hard to put a puzzle together when you are missing pieces.

I've been seeing so many patients in my practice with low iron and deficiency seen on bloodwork 🩸

In these cases, I always turn to quality iron supplements, which can increase levels much faster than food alone.

However, iron-rich sources of food are important to include alongside supplements because nutrition really is foundational.

When it comes to iron, there is what is called "heme iron" and "non-heme iron". Heme iron is found in animal products such as beef, chicken, and seafood like mussels or sardines. Non-heme iron is found in plant-based foods such as beans, nuts and seeds, and vegetables like spinach or broccoli. 🥦

Heme iron is much more bioavailable and absorption rates in our body is estimated at 15-35% with very few factors affecting its absorption. Non-heme iron is less absorbed (about 2-20%) and many factors affect its absorption. Vitamin C actually ENHANCES non-heme iron absorption so pairing vitamin C rich foods with iron-rich foods can positively impact absorption rates. 🍊

Next posts coming up will include signs of low iron, what to look for on bloodwork, and how to choose a high-quality iron supplement (and how to reduce the dreaded constipation and nausea associated with some iron supplements!). 💊

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month ♀️

Cervical cancer is a highly preventable cancer that occurs in the cervix (the passageway from the uterus to the va**na). Only 100 years ago, cervical cancer was the # 1 cause of cancer death among women - but we've come a long way! Thanks to the development of the Pap test, deaths from cervical cancer dropped by 70%. 🙌

Years after developing the Pap test, the detection of HPV (Human Papillomavirus) in cervical cancer was noted. This led to the development of the HPV vaccine which can prevent cervical cancer from occurring. 💉

Some fast facts on HPV/Cervical cancer:
🌿 Risk factors for cervical cancer include HPV infection, smoking, and an immunocompromised state.
🌿 One of the main red flags for cervical cancer is bleeding after in*******se (which can also present with va**nal pain and pain during sexual in*******se). Always mention this to your doctor.
🌿 HPV can usually be cleared by the body. However, in some women it can progress to cervical cancer. A healthy immune system is key. Strains of HPV that are higher-risk include HPV 16, 18, 31, and 33.
🌿 Current guidelines are that if you've ever been sexually active, you should have regular Pap tests by age 21 and repeated every 3 years. This is the best way to detect dysplasia (characteristic changes in infected cervical cells) that can progress to cervical cancer.

If you have a cervix, this is your cue to book a Pap test if you are due for one!🤗

Ever wondered why baby shouldn't have honey if they are under 1 years old?🍯👶

It's all due to a bacteria known as Clostridium botulinum!🦠 C. botulinum produces toxins that can cause infant botulism (symptoms include muscle weakness, constipation, difficulty breathing). Spores of C. botulinum can be found as a contaminant in honey and, since babies have immature digestive systems, they can have trouble clearing the spores.

It is recommended to:
🍼Not give honey to any infant below the age of one
🍼Not give any processed foods made with honey (graham crackers, honey cheerios, etc) to babies less than one
🍼Do not dip baby's soother in honey

Both pasteurized and unpasteurized honey is to be avoided, as pasteurization does not kill C. botulinum🍯

Did you know that as a licensed ND, I am a primary care practitioner who is trained to diagnose, prevent, and treat acute and chronic illness as well as prescribe medication in B.C. Many years are put into interdisciplinary education to become a naturopathic doctor, with Canadian naturopathic students completing more than 4100 hours of instruction, of which at least 1200 hours consist of supervised, hands-on clinical training. Practitioners that sound like but are NOT licensed as a naturopathic doctor are not regulated, which means, you as the patient, are not protected and you can’t have confidence that adequate training has been taken to keep you safe.

If you’re ready to see a naturopathic doctor, I want you to see the real deal, so how can you figure out if you’re seeing a licensed ND?

-Search the public register to see if the practitioner you’re considering is licensed and in good standing with the profession’s regulatory board: https://cnpbc.bc.ca/public/public-register/
-Contact the office where the practitioner works and ask them for the license number. If they don’t have a license number, they are not registered or regulated.
-There are a few protected titles that can be used by licensed naturopathic doctors including naturopathic physician and naturopath. A natural doctor or holistic doctor is NOT a licensed or regulated professional.

Fun fact: BC was the first province in Canada to regulate naturopaths, which happened in 1923. It was also the first province to provide prescriptive authority to NDs, which happened in 2009.

I hate being a Negative Nancy about this stuff - but if you know anything about the pathophysiology of heart disease, diabetes, etc then you will know how disastrous this can be.

Sure, it might be a smart business move for Krispy Kreme. But for the individuals getting free doughnuts? ⬆️ inflammatory cytokine production, ⬆️ nasty foam cells contributing to atherosclerosis, ⬆️ obesity linked to worsened virus outcomes as well as increased morbidity from many causes.

Let's not pretend a vaccine can save us from everything.

*I am thrilled that a vaccine is finally here. But our healthcare system is failing - we are currently facing an Obesity Pandemic that is a huge public health concern.

About Me

Hi everyone! My name is Emily and I am a Naturopathic Medical Student at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in Vancouver, British Columbia. Naturopathic Doctors (ND's) are primary care physicians who are trained to diagnose and treat a variety of health conditions and diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, skin conditions, allergies, and more! The goal of the Naturopathic Doctor is to find the root cause of the symptom of which the patient is experiencing and to bring the body back to balance and good health. They utilize modern science and natural medicine to offer a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan, all while emphasizing prevention and using therapies that minimize the risk of harm and side effects. A Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) degree is a 4-year, full-time, graduate level medical program similar to a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, and there are currently 7 accredited naturopathic medical schools in North America . . I have my Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree with a major in Biology and am passionate about natural, evidence-based medicine, clinical nutrition, and public speaking. On this page, I will be sharing health information, nutritious recipes, facts about naturopathic medicine, and more! I am SO happy to have you along on my journey and I hope to inspire you to live a healthy, happy, and active lifestyle.

Yours in good health, Emily
