I will be taking tomorrow off of social media and the afternoon off of work in honour of Orange Shirt Day, and Truth and Reconciliation.

My plan is to spend time learning more and reflecting on how I as a white person and a therapist both benefit from and perpetuate the genocide that our political, educational, justice, and health systems were built on; as well as ways I can work to change this and be more accountable.

If you would like to join me, here are some resources to look into:

Every child matters 🧡

September 30th is the Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. If you’re an Indigenous ally, take this day [and every day] to learn more about the historical and current realities of Indigenous Peoples 🪶

via Alice Baker: It is quite common that someone will say to me, “I just don’t understand why I can’t stop,” or a loved one might say, “Why can’t they just eat?”

When we add context and story, things take on a whole new meaning.

Possibly that behavior provides a numbness, a sense of control, or a way out of really intense emotions that feel too hard to bear.

Possibly there were compliments with the weight loss that met an unmet need to feel delighted in.

Possibly the hypervigilance and increased anxiety kept one safe in a chaotic environment.

There is always a reason that makes the behavior make sense, and often allows us to respect and see the behavior as a brilliant survival mechanism.

Letting go of these behaviors can’t just happen without entering the context.

One can’t just start to eat.

One can’t just stop the addiction.

One just can’t stop feeling anxious.

Understanding the context allows one to really enter their brilliance and true self. And it is connecting to this authentic self that they also find their recovery power.

Step into your context.

Hear and listen to the context your loved one shares with you.

THEY are worth it.

YOU are worth it.

A big part of therapy is learning why we do the things we do and react they way we react.

I feel like the world needs this message right now.

Read the caption, it's beautiful! ❤️

Grief is the sibling of Rage. Often dismissed, depleted, hurried, and disenfranchised. With little TRUE education given in relation to how they manifest in our bodies, in the collective; and how to really heal- not just barely cope.

Grief is not only hidden; it’s avoided. Demonized. Pathologized. Rushed. I like to simmer on my grief. I’m allowed to grieve a thing or person I’ve loved or felt , for so long. Capitalism doesn’t get to tell me to wrap my deep ability to love + my longing up in a bow! I get to rewrite the story and linger in the grieving.

Rage and Grief are homies. Are lovers. Are the messages. They work together. They ride together. And unpacking them can feel enormous. Be kind to yourselves.

Check Out The Dope Conversation I had with @hiddengriefpod about Grief, Rage, Colonization, Trauma + our humanities.

If you struggle understanding your rage child, accessing them, making space for them and you are feeling stuck, or burned out, or about to “blow”

Today I grieve ancestors who cannot rage. Today I give myself grace for the motivation I cannot locate. Today I allow myself space for the emotions I struggle to acknowledge.”

You deserve gentleness, kindness, empathy, and balance. You deserve your full humanity. You deserve grace and compassion. Resilience is overrated...

But I am not a diamond, I am a human being with emotions, and I can also thrive under balance and gentleness."

Don’t talk yourself out of a dream because it might take a long time to accomplish, or you think you don’t deserve it.

Believe in yourself. You are more than enough.🤍

via Anna Sweeney: It’s a short story, but an accurate one.

At every given moment, more is going right for your body than is not.

Think about that.

The human skeleton renews itself completely every 10 years.
The stomach lining is replaced every 4 to 5 days.
The human brain uses just as much power as a 10 watt light bulb.
In an adult human, blood circulates about 12,000 miles a day. This is like traveling from east to west across the widest part of the Pacific Ocean.
The average person breathes about 20,000 times a day.

I am happily self identifying as a fan of science, and these are incredible things.

These are incredible things that are happening whether we love our bodies or we don’t. These are incredible things that are happening whether we are healthy or we are ill. These are incredible things that are happening because the human body is resilient.

You are resilient.

Wellness culture is a liar.

The end.

I love this. Throughout life we have many opportunities to refine ourselves. With each discovery and experience I believe we have the opportunity to become more and more authentic. More attuned and responsive to ourselves. It can be painful at times but the outcome is often so beautiful ❤️ #healinglifeshurts #traumatherapy #traumatraining #cptsd #ptsd #healingcptsd #healingtrauma #selfawareness #authenticity #discoveringyourtrueself www.ATTCH.org

I am learning the most important part of my work is to embody my values.

To no longer push through when I’m exhausted.

To resist the urge to overwork and overachieve.

To stop overriding my body’s limits.

To slow down to the pace of my nervous system.

To acknowledge the sociocultural inequalities and internalised capitalism that can make it so difficult to rest.

To do my best to role model what it means to be a highly sensitive, well nourished, deeply rested woman who honours the needs of her soul.

Repost from @natalia_rachel_change

The moment we realise
‘Oh my trauma has caused me to be like this’
We wake up.
A flooding of awareness.
‘Perhaps I make sense after all.’
In this moment, confusion starts to lift, and shame starts to dissipate.
Just enough for us to see through the fog…
And take a step forward in the right direction.
Healing begins here.

I’ve felt this moment a number of times on my journey… each time I’m flooded with gratitude, aliveness and a wave of grief. It feels a bit like coming up for air after living under water. We need to pause and acknowledge the enormity of these moments because they can provide incredible shifts towards creating the life we want and deserve.

Very well stated! Cheers, Phil Youngs🤓
Thanks The Institute for the Psychology of Eating! More and more, research is showing that our minds and bodies are not separate. They are connected so closely. How we think about and talk to ourselves directly impacts our physical health. This is why a holistic view of health is so necessary. #holistichealth #healthandwellness #yourmindmatters #smallchangesbigresults #startwhereyouare #rootsofresilience

Self care is so important, not just for ourselves but for everyone we love and support as well. It's not selfish, it's necessary.
