A great active way to enjoy reading!

A StoryWalk is an outdoor reading experience where a children’s book is deconstructed and the pages of the book are placed in different locations for families to follow a trail and finish the book.

Pages from the book I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen will be displayed in the windows of 13 downtown businesses. Starting at the The Belleville Public Library, participants will be guided by a walking map to read the book one page - and one storefront - at a time.

Take a walk, read a book and discover downtown this June!

Are you looking for a family game or new building toy for your children? Consider supporting local business, Scalliwag Toys and if you plan to get your items delivered, consider choosing Links to Leaning as your charity of choice. You can e-transfer your donation to [email protected]. We appreciate your continued support!

As everyone is no doubt aware, at midnight tonight Ontario will be adding some extra layers of restrictions to its COVID-19 lockdown. Everyone certainly has their own opinions on this, ranging from full blown outrage, to acceptance, to tacit approval. This post will explain what Scalliwag Toys will be doing moving forward.

Right now, it is imperative, in our minds, to continue doing what we have done throughout the entirety of the COVID-19 crisis (a crisis, btw, that started six weeks after we took ownership of this store). Scalliwag Toys has tried, as best as it could, to ensure that our customers have somewhere they can find the tools they need to alleviate the boredom, the cabin fever, the inevitable frayed nerves, and tensions. We will continue to do so throughout this lockdown and wanted to remind our customers – now more of a family – that Scalliwag Toys will be available for curbside pick-up or delivery with remote payment options.

The newest bevy of rules means our payment methods are restricted to payment before arrival, which means we will only be able to accept payment through etransfer, PayPal, or by using a credit card over the phone. We have safely used these methods all year, so don’t worry one bit!

As far as delivery goes, we have updated our scope of delivery (you can see our delivery zones at our website www.scalliwagtoys.ca) to reach as many people as we can and we ask that if you want delivery please be sure to donate to a local charity and provide proof of donation. We are strongly encouraging people help the local Humane Society right now as they are in desperate need of assistance, but any local charity will do. $5 donations will cover delivery Zone 1, with all other highlighted zones requiring a $10 donation. As we have expanded our delivery range substantially, we cannot promise same day delivery, but will endeavour to deliver your product within two business days.

Scalliwag Toys hopes that everyone stays safe throughout this lockdown, and we hope we can help keep everyone just a little bit sane. If you are anything like us, you will bury yourself in a board game or puzzle, but eventually you'll need to come up for air for a new game ;)

Stay safe,
Scalliwag Toys

‘Twas the night before Christmas…✨

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, along with an ensemble cast of invited actors, have recorded a very special reading of the much-loved poem.

The poem was recorded in support of the Actors’ Benevolent Fund, of which The Prince of Wales has been Patron for over 20 years taking over the role from Her Majesty The Queen in 2000.

The charity supports actors and stage managers who are unable to work due to illness, injury or old age and those experiencing financial hardship particularly during the Coronavirus pandemic.

This year has been particularly difficult for those working in the industry and in April the charity launched an Emergency Grant Fund to support those in their profession who are experiencing financial hardship owing to the pandemic.

Fun to watch

Please do not try to come in here with your "professional" opinions about this video. Just move on if you don't have anything nice to say.

We did this for fun. She enjoyed it. It was cool to see her work her way through it. She sat attentive for the whole thing because she liked doing it and wanted to see what the results were. She's never going to remember it other than seeing this video. If you don't like it/agree with it/understand it, maintain your dignity and keep scrolling! 💙

For everyone else...

Yes, this is a long one! I even cut out a good chunk of questions! There were 50 in total and she enjoyed them all, even if she had to ask for clarification on some.

Thia came about because one day while reading the comments, I saw where someone had said they would be curious to know what a personality assessment says about Ana. That made me curious as well so I did some research to see if I could find one.

The internet was telling me that the Big Five Personality Test (IPIP Big-Five Factor Markers) was one of the most accurate but it written for adults. However, we're just doing it for fun so, we figured we would give it a try!

Here is the website we used if anyone is interested in trying it for themselves: https://openpsychometrics.org/tests/IPIP-BFFM

Here are Ana's results:
1) Intellect/Imagination - 84th percentile
2) Agreeableness - 80th percentile
3) Extroversion - 86th percentile
4) Emotional Stability - 87th percentile
5) Conscientiousness - 67th percentile

Our Story

The Centre has a comprehensive resource library that contains books for all reading levels, which are available to loan. Our collections are continually growing, and we offer a large variety of new and popular titles. We also have a large collection of games and toys. For adults, we have guides to many disorders, resources on literacy development, and other parental topics.

Annually we celebrate the reading achievements of all children enrolled in the Reading Rocks! program. Each child set a personal goal of how many books they will read in one year. Most surpass this goal. On Family Literacy Day we celebrate with family and friends and each child takes home a medal or plaque with the number of books read inscribed on it. Youth who read chapter books take home a plaque with the number of pages turned in a year.
