This weeks episode is live! ‘To Take Care of the World’

Join us for an honest chat with Jackie Schoemaker Holmes, PhD. A woman, mother, sociologist, poet and empowerment specialist.

We talk about her own journey into motherhood and how her experience with post partum depression and anxiety birthed a business and community in which she has the opportunity to meaningfully support and empower women.

We talk about the complexities of being a woman, the experiences and emotions that can show up throughout the journey of motherhood, and the the impact motherhood can have on our identity. Jackie talks about shame and judgement and how motherhood can easily get tangled up with both. Jackie says, “no one can define what it means to be a mother for me, and since I made that decision, I have never felt more empowered.”

This episode spoke to each of us as women, though our experiences and stages of life are different - a truly vulnerable chat. We hope it will do the same for you, regardless of the perspectives you bring to the conversation

The Practice of Showing Up

This weeks episode is an inspiring conversation with Taucha Post from @adhd.yoga

From a young age, Taucha always felt different. ‘Easy things’ that she saw her peers doing with ease were really hard for her, and she felt like she was always working way harder than anyone else to get the same results. She started making sense of her struggles by thinking of herself as a ‘stupid person who works hard’. She couldn’t make any other sense of what she was experiencing. It wasn’t until years later, during her professional career as a speech therapist, that by chance she was listening to an episode of The Current on ADHD and the lightbulb started going off for her, ‘this is me’ she realized.

Taucha walks us through what led up to her diagnosis and her experience of having ADHD, and about how ADHD, as a neurological issue, is different for women in very important ways. We dig into the role hormones play, the challenges ADHD presents and the things, for her, that have been particularly helpful.

We talk about the practice of showing up, even when that means you're a bit of a mess - and building self kindness as you do so.

“Water is big, water is powerful, water is so much more than us, and being out in it you see you self as one small part of a much larger thing. And that sense of perspective is incredibly grounding and helpful for framing yourself and your challenges in a deeper way.” -Dan Rubinstein

In our recent chat with Dan Rubinstein, author of Born to Walk: The Transformative Power of a Pedestrian Act, Dan speaks about the benefits and power of connecting with our own two feet and getting outside, on land and on water. Through his more recent passion, Paddle-boarding, he has been able to experience his world, locally and internationally, exploring the different perspective that being out on the water gives us.

He says, the more we pay attention to walking and water will be good for our planet. We agree, and can’t wait to share this episode with you.

“movement is the song of the body.”

Last night, in our Build Your Bend program for kids we did something we called ‘mood dancing’ or ‘mood movement’. We played a few different songs, all different beats and tempos, and the kids were instructed to move their bodies freely with the music however they wished.

Spinning in circles, jumping on the spot, twirling with their arms extended, swaying from side to side.

After each song we discussed how it felt and what emotions came up for us.

Fun, silly, adventurous, calm.

We also talked about how we can use music and moving our bodies to help when we are feeling stressed, upset or frustrated; turn on a song that makes you feel good and move!

When was the last time you put some music on, closed your eyes, and let your body move freely? On your feet, or sitting on your chair.

Get out of your head and into your body. Trust us, it feels good.

Last night we had the privilege of running a mindfulness & movement workshops for a fun group of Sparks.

At the end, we did a short ‘I am’ meditation together to practice self love, asking the girls to think of three “I am” statements of their own choosing while they hold their hands to their heart.

I am kind
I am brave
I am unique

One Spark shared afterwards that she only used one “I am” statement...
“I am everything”

She said, “I am everything, because I can be everything or anything I want.”

Yes, she absolutely can.

Build Your Bend

This 3 week program for kids is not just a kids yoga & mindfulness class. To us, it’s much more than that.

It’s about helping kids move their bodies in a way that feels good. Stirring up energy and shaking out what they don’t need.

It’s about empowering them to believe that they have the tools to create calm within their own bodies with something as simple as their breath.

It’s about encouraging them to be curious about their emotions and what they are feeling, with an open heart.

It’s about developing self awareness and self compassion.

It’s about connection, with self and others.

We can’t wait to start another session next week. If you know anyone with kids who may be interested please share! We’ve still got a few spots left!

Thursday Feb 4, 11, 18

“To be ‘well’ is not to live in a state of perpetual safety and calm but to move fluidly from a state of adversity, risk, adventure, or excitement, back to safety and calm, and out again.

Stress is not bad for you; being stuck is bad for you.

Wellness happens when your body is in a place of safety for you even when your body is not necessarily in a safe place. you can be well even during the times when you don’t feel good.

Wellness is not a state of being, but a state of action. “

2021: “Connection”
This year, as many of us settle into another lockdown (depending where this finds you), we hope you are feeling connected – to people, ideas and the possibility that different days lie ahead.

This year, the idea of connection has proven to be such an important one for us here at Bend. We have spent a good part of the past 10 months gaining perspective on the things that are important to each of us as individuals and as a team. As we have learned to connect differently, we have also learned that there exist deeps wells of creativity within each of us, brought to light as we create space for one another.
Connection can mean something different to each of us, depending on the perspectives we bring to where we are right now. It may be about connecting with yourself, building time for learning a new skill or reflecting on what’s transpiring around and within you.

We sent our winter newsletter out today with this theme and some thoughts about where we have been and where we are going.

Winter 2021 brings us the opportunity to connect with you through a book discussion on “Burnout: Unlocking the Stress Cycle”, season 2 of Bend. The Podcast, and of course of regular offerings of individual counselling, Build Your Bend for kids, and private yoga/movement sessions.

If you would like to find out more about our winter offerings please get in touch or check out our website www.bendwellness.org

Stay well 💛

Eventually everything connects. People, ideas, objects.

This is something we have found to hold so much truth for us this past year. Starting a podcast has made us feel vulnerable, excited and most importantly, connected.

To our guests,
Thank you for trusting us with your stories, for taking risks and sharing your knowledge, passions, questions and struggles.

We feel honoured that each of you were a part of this journey.

To our listeners,
Thank you tuning in, your feedback & your support. This would be all for nothing if we did not reach the ears of people who are curious about what wellness means through different lenses.

Thanks you all for being part of the larger conversation. We can’t wait to get started with season 2 in 2021 🎤

Shulamit Ber Levtov

In this conversation with @shuliji she reminds us of the importance of a pause, going slowly, & the importance of having faith that everything will be ok.

We dive into the stress cycle discussing why it so important to fully metabolize our stress and understand the difference between stress and stressor.

We discus why burn out & pandemic fatigue are effecting women at a higher rate than men, what the term “she-session” means and what the 6 month wall is.

When asked what wellness means to her, she states:
“Taking the next right action with an open heart, with as little clinging to the fruits as I can, is the best way to be well”.

Lisa Gregoire; on being brave, funny & new ✏️

Recently we had the privilege of chatting with award winning writer, Lisa Gregoire.

Our conversation explored her creative process and art as a way to shift our perspectives and illuminate meaning. We discussed her transition from journalist to writer of fiction and she shares why she thinks humour is important to thread throughout her work; now more than ever.

Lisa also tackles the question, is there really such a thing as a true fiction story?

Reading: a way to expand our minds, open our eyes, and fill our hearts.

Recently we spoke to author & journalist Lisa Gregoire for Bend. the Podcast.
We touch on her switch from journalist to fiction writer and ask the question, is there really such a thing as a fictional story?

Since spending more time at home during 2020 reading has made its way to the top of my hobbies, specifically a renewed love for fiction. Though the stories may be fictional, each carries truth and lessons; a window into history or a reflection of self or others in an imaginary character. Taking us places we haven’t been before. Which, right now- is such a gift.
