Content Warning: Su***de

On World Su***de Day, LDAHH is here to raise awareness of the mental health concerns for individuals with learning disabilities.

The Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto conducted a study in which they found su***de attempts was much higher for women who had been diagnosed with learning disabilities, additionally men with LDs also were more likely to have attempted su***de compared to men without LDs

"The disturbingly high prevalence of su***de attempts among people with learning disabilities underline the importance of health professionals screening patients with learning disabilities for mental illness and suicidal thoughts." said Wook Yang, a co-author of the 2017 study.

At times, the work of su***de prevention can feel overwhelming, but even small actions can make a huge difference. #WSPD2021 #CreatingHopeThroughAction

Many students with learning disabilities are anxious about the return to school this fall, and they need dedicated, intensive support to help them keep up. To help with this, we will be offering our half-day Core Skills program. Students will receive dedicated support in literacy, mathematics, and social skills.

The Core Skills program is designed to complement students' school learning. It can be overwhelming for students to be in school all day and then transition to programming in the evening, so this program runs during the school day. There are two time slots that we offer: 9:00am-11:30am, and 1:00pm-3:30pm.

Our intensive remedial literacy and mathematical teaching will include multi-sensory approaches — such as Orton-Gillingham and Wilson — which are often seen as the gold standard in supporting children with learning disabilities. The teaching will be explicit, systematic, sequential, multi-sensory and flexible.

If you have any questions or are interested in applying visit www.ldahh.ca
