🎃 HALLOWEEN FUN PART TWO ✌🏽
+ For my healthcare homies

Sniffing can make your neck muscles tight.

The scalenes are a group of deep muscles along the side of the neck, and they do more than move your head.

They also help with breathing by assisting with elevation of the upper ribs — especially when breathing becomes more effortful.

So if you’ve been sniffing constantly, breathing more through the upper chest, or generally making those accessory breathing muscles work overtime, the scalenes may get involved.

And their referral pattern can be surprisingly widespread.

Trigger points in the scalene group may refer discomfort into the:
shoulder, chest, upper back, arm, forearm, and even toward the thumb/index-finger side of the hand.

That’s why sometimes the place you feel something is not the only place worth assessing.

I’m also showing a stretch for the scalenes as a group, with a little extra focus on the anterior scalene.

Yes — abdominal massage is a thing.

And honestly, it’s one of those areas people rarely think about until someone explains why it might matter.

The abdomen includes layers of muscle and connective tissue, and it also moves with your diaphragm every time you breathe.

Gentle abdominal work may sometimes be useful for things like:

* muscular tension
* constipation
* abdominal guarding
* general discomfort or tightness

And sometimes the goal isn’t to “fix” anything.

Sometimes the area just needs to stop bracing.

As always, treatment should be comfortable, appropriate, and based on what’s actually going on with you.

“Why is this pain so widespread?”

This is one of those questions that sounds simple but usually needs a much bigger conversation.

When did it start?
Was there an injury?
Is it constant or intermittent?
What makes it better or worse?
Does it travel?
Is it aching, burning, electric, numb, tight, pulling, cramping?

Those details matter.

That’s also why assessment is so important — whether that’s with your RMT, physio, doctor, osteopath, chiropractor, OT, or another member of your healthcare team.

I can’t solve someone’s pain through a Reel.

But I can help people become more curious about what their body is telling them.

Pain is a clue. It isn’t always the whole answer.

Massage at any time of the month. PERIOD.

There is no rule that says you have to suffer quietly through your cycle and cancel the things that might actually help you feel more comfortable.

If you’re well enough to come in, massage can be adapted to you that day.

Lighter pressure.
Different positioning.
Heat on the lower abdomen or sacrum.
Skipping an area that feels uncomfortable.
Changing your mind.

Your body doesn’t have to perform “normal” for anyone.

You’re allowed to choose comfort.

And if somebody told you otherwise — mom, grandma, auntie, nosy neighbour — kindly leave them out of it. 😂

Pigeon pose is pretty. It is not the only stretch your hips need. 😂

If you’re dealing with hip or low-back tightness, these are 4 of my go-to stretches:

Knee to same shoulder
Low back / erector spinae

Knee to opposite shoulder
Glute max bias

Knee across the body
Glute medius + quadratus lumborum

Thread the needle
Piriformis

You do not need to force yourself into the deepest version of a stretch for it to be useful.

Move gently, breathe, and pay attention to where you actually feel it.

Your body usually gives you more than one way in.

These muscles work every step you take.

And most people barely know they’re there.

The front and outside of your lower leg contain muscles that help lift your foot, control ankle movement, and support you while you walk, run, climb stairs, or change direction.

The tibialis anterior is one of the big ones in the front.

The fibularis muscles run along the outside of the lower leg and help support ankle movement and stability.

They’re not glamorous.

They’re just quietly working all day long.

And honestly, that’s one of the things I love most about the body.

So many parts of us are doing incredible work before we ever think to notice them.
