A little book temptation for you… 📖✨

With all the preparations for the Northumberland Witch Walk, I haven’t had a chance to read a book this week! But we unpacked a new book order today, and this beauty deserved a little preview.

Incantations & Divinations by Alana Fairchild is now available at Mystic Avenue. I’m giving you a peek inside in this reel, and it’s officially going on my reading list. I should have a review for you next week, once the Witch Walk whirlwind settles!

Only TWO copies available in the shop. 🖤

🖤 LEARN THE SONG. BRING YOUR VOICE. 🖤
When The Northumberland Witch Walk begins this Saturday, our Women’s Choir will lead us from Victoria Square Park toward the street singing Savage Daughter.

And we want you to sing with us.

As the choir begins, add your voice. As we move onto the street, let hundreds of voices rise together.

🥁 Bring your frame drum, hand drum or rattle if you have one.
🎶 Learn the song.
🖤 Bring your voice.

You do not have to be a singer. You don’t have to know every word perfectly. Just join in.

There is something powerful about hundreds of us beginning this walk together with one song, one rhythm and a whole lot of voices.

Listen to Savage Daughter here and start learning it before Saturday:

Then when you hear the choir begin...

Sing with us. Drum with us. Walk with us. 🖤🥁

📅 Saturday, October 24
📍 Victoria Square Park, Colborne
🕯️ Their Voices, Our Remembrance begins at 5:00 PM
🥁 The procession begins immediately following the main theatrical presentation

🖤 FIVE DAYS TO GO! 🖤
THE NORTHUMBERLAND WITCH WALK

It’s almost here.
This Saturday, October 24, hundreds of us will gather in Victoria Square Park and Downtown Colborne for an afternoon of music, performance, food, readings, shopping, remembrance, community and, as the sun begins to set, The Northumberland Witch Walk.

And so far, the weather is looking like it may give us a beautiful, sunny fall day! ☀️🍂

Here are a few things to know before you come.

🪑 BRING A CHAIR. Seating in Victoria Square Park is very limited, so bring a camp chair or portable chair. You can leave it in the park while we walk and return to it afterward.

🧣 DRESS IN LAYERS & BRING A BLANKET. It’s late October. Even with sunshine, it will cool down as we move toward evening. Dress in layers, wear comfortable shoes and bring a blanket to keep cozy during the performances.

🖤 YES, MEN ARE WELCOME. The Northumberland Witch Walk intentionally centres women’s voices, histories and lived experiences, but men are warmly invited to attend, listen and walk alongside us as respectful witnesses and allies.

🎩 YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE REGISTERED TO ATTEND. This is a FREE community event and you are welcome to simply show up. However, you must be registered to be eligible for a complimentary Witch Walk hat. Hats will be given to the first 300 registered participants who CHECK IN at the registration tent, while supplies last. Use the link below to register:

🕯️ 5:00 PM | THEIR VOICES, OUR REMEMBRANCE

At 5:00 PM, we move into the heart of the gathering.
Our Women’s Choir will join us as we begin Their Voices, Our Remembrance, followed by the first-person stories of women accused and persecuted as witches across different places and periods in history, and finally the voices of the unnamed women whose stories were never recorded. Performance Schedule Witch Wak
This is why we gather.

To remember the women whose voices were silenced. To speak their names. To acknowledge what happened when women’s knowledge, independence, difference or power was considered dangerous.

And to recognize that the struggle to silence, discredit or shame women who speak, challenge and claim their own power has NOT disappeared.

🥁 5:50 PM | AND THEN WE WALK
Our Women’s Choir begins Savage Daughter as the procession starts to move out of Victoria Square Park.

Then the drums become the heartbeat of the walk.

Together, we take to the streets of Downtown Colborne, carrying our lanterns and the names of women we have come to remember.

The procession is scheduled from approximately 6:00 to 6:40 PM, followed by the Women’s Choir singing We Shall Be Known and our final Speak Her Name remembrance and closing.

🚗 PARKING & WALK ROUTE

🌿Sunday Reflections | Let People Help You🌿

I have always found it much easier to be the person helping than the person being helped. I can organize, take care of things, solve problems, show up when someone needs me and carry a lot when I have to. There is something comfortable about being capable. What I am not nearly as comfortable with is saying, I can't do this by myself. I need some help.

I don't think I am alone in this. Many of us have built a significant part of our identity around being the person other people can count on. We are the helpers, the caregivers, the organizers, the ones who step in when something needs to be done. There is nothing wrong with that. Being of service to others is one of the ways we create connection and meaning in our lives. But I have been thinking lately about how easily being capable can turn into believing we should be able to handle everything ourselves.

There is vulnerability in receiving. When I help you, I am in a position I understand. I have something to offer and I can give it. When I need you, something changes. I have to admit that I don't have everything under control. I have to trust that you will show up. I have to allow you to see that I have limits. For those of us who are used to being the strong one, that can be surprisingly uncomfortable.

Sometimes we tell ourselves that we don't want to burden anyone. Everyone is busy. Everyone has their own problems. It will be faster if I just do it myself. And sometimes all of that is true. But I also wonder how often those perfectly reasonable explanations are covering something deeper. Maybe we don't like feeling indebted. Maybe we have been disappointed before. Maybe at some point in our lives we learned that depending on other people wasn't safe, so independence became our protection.

The problem is that independence can eventually become isolation.
We talk so much about the importance of giving, but giving only works when someone is willing to receive. If I believe there is value in showing up for another person, then I also have to recognize that when I refuse to let anyone show up for me, I am denying them that same experience. There have been many times when helping someone I care about has made me feel useful, connected and grateful that they trusted me enough to ask. Why would I assume that my need is a burden when I don't experience theirs that way?

I think this is one of the things community is supposed to teach us. We are not meant to be endlessly self-sufficient. Human beings have always survived through cooperation. We take turns carrying things. Sometimes I have more strength, time or resources and I can carry a little more for you. Sometimes you have more and you carry something for me. Neither position makes one of us stronger or weaker. It simply means that at different points in our lives, we need different things from each other.

And perhaps there is a spiritual lesson in receiving that we miss when we focus only on service. Receiving asks us to surrender some control. It asks us to trust. It asks us to believe that we are worthy of care even when we aren't being useful to anyone. That last one can be particularly difficult. If so much of our value has become connected to what we do for other people, being the one who needs something can feel strangely uncomfortable.

There will always be times when we have to carry ourselves. Not everyone will show up when we need them, and sometimes asking for help will disappoint us. But I don't want the possibility of disappointment to convince me that needing other people is a weakness. I don't think we came here to prove how much we can carry alone.

Maybe strength isn't always saying, I've got this.

Sometimes strength is looking at the people around us and saying, I don't.

And then letting them help. 🌿
