It sure feels like summer in Collingwood! ☀️⛵️

While I love all the seasons, summertime is definitely my favourite - especially now that I have air conditioning at home. I love the heat, don’t get me wrong, but there are those days and weeks when you just need a break. To feel human. And to use your oven. And you guys know my hair..🙄

While wrapping up another full week @bewellcollingwood which included hosting some very bright naturopathic medical students from @myccnm (virtually of course) I noticed that I am booking new patients into November. Holy shiitake!!!

If you’re an existing patient, please don’t panic. I reserve appointment times for you to ensure optimal continuity of care. There are a couple spots left in July, and August is filling up rather quickly. If you want to connect this summer give us a call ASAP.

If you’ve been thinking about working with me, I have a wait list that is being updated daily. Cancellations happen. I love pasta. And pizza. And good wine. And bubbles. Sometimes I even eat #sugar (gasp) ideally in the form of cupcakes (duh) 🧁

I make informed, healthy choices about what I eat (most of the time) in order to feel my best. And sometimes I eat whatever the heck I feel like, without guilt, shame or fear.

I have spent the last decade+ learning what to prioritize with my nutrition while helping my patients do the same. Here is what I focus on:

🧁 regulating blood sugar for mood, energy and hormonal health
🦠 keeping the microbiome balanced, diverse and nourished
💩 keeping BMs regular because you have to take out the trash
🙅‍♀️ keeping the gut barrier intact
🔥 in order to keep your immune system chill and self-tolerating
🚒 while actively fighting inflammation
🍒 and oxidative stress
🧠 to keep the brain sharp
🫀 and blood vessels supple
🫁 and lungs clear
🦵🏽and joints mobile
👄 and skin glowing
🦋 to prevent and treat chronic, degenerative diseases that have no business messing with your best life.

This strategy includes enjoying occasional treats. Because a healthy body can eat a little sugar and food colouring and live to tell the tale. 😁

Unless you are #celiac or have a severe reaction to #gluten, a little bit of wheat won’t likely derail your well-being.

Unless you’re in a #crohnsdisease or #ulcerativecolitis flare up, allergic or #lactoseintolerant a little dairy won’t turn your world upside down.

Unless you were recently diagnosed with #SIBO or in an #IBS flare, you need not fear foods high in #FODMAP (s)

And do you really need to buy EVERYTHING organic and non-GMO and #grassfed ... because, you know ... #glyphosate ??? ☠️🌾🌽 (actually, glyphosate IS a big problem and we should go there in another post..)

Rather than feeling guilty/ashamed/fearful about food choices, let’s get educated and make informed decisions, prioritizing and supporting the needs of the individual.

And sometimes, let’s break all the rules! 😈

Falling on May 17th, IDAHOBIT is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism, and Transphobia 🏳️‍🌈 For many, it represents a day to celebrate their q***rness and show support for all members of the LGBTQI+ community. Most importantly, it is a time to display unity. On this day, we recognise and stand against the violation of LGBTQI+ rights occurring globally, voice awareness of these injustices and advocate for the work still needed to combat LGBTQI+ discrimination.

The roots of IDAHOBIT stem from May 17th 1990, when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. Previously classified as a mental disorder, homosexuality was now defined medically as a natural branch of human sexuality. This day was a historical landmark for the LGBTQI community, marking a positive shift in societal views of homosexuality and reflecting the emergence of fundamental human rights that many in the LGBTQI+ community were previously denied. In 2004, May 17th was chosen as the International Day against Homophobia, aiming to highlight and work towards diminishing the ongoing violence towards the LGBTQI+ community. IDAHOBIT has since grown, and is now celebrated in 132 countries. Most significantly, the day is even celebrated in some countries that still criminalise the LGBTQI+ community.

Over the last few decades we have seen this change reflected through legislation in Australia and many countries worldwide. The Netherlands became the first country to legalise same-sex marriage in 2001, paving the way for other countries to do the same. In Australia 2013, discrimination against LGBTQI+ individuals became illegal under national law for the first time. However, homosexuality and other expressions of q***rness are still stigmatized and criminalised internationally. Conversion practices remain legal and prevalent both internationally and in the majority of Australian States and Territories, and over 69 countries criminalise homosexuality, with at least 6 of these countries imposing the death penalty. The list of violence and persecution against the LGBTQI+ community continues on. For many, these are not just statistics and facts, but the reality they stand up against everyday.

Discrimination against LGBTQI+ individuals is not always expressed through violence, verbal attacks and unjust legislation, especially in Australia and societies that are more accepting. Discrimination can be seen through restriction to healthcare, education, information and benefits. Health discrepancies between members of the LGBTQI+ community and the general population exist, particularly regarding mental health and access to healthcare.

Our position as medical students enables us to advocate on behalf of our LGBTQI+ patients and help abolish the inequity they face within the healthcare system. Here are a few ways medical students can celebrate IDAHOBIT and assist in creating a more comfortable and inclusive healthcare system for LGBTQI+ patients.
• Work with your MedSoc Q***r group to increase LGBTQI+ teaching at your university
• Call out discriminatory behaviour or comments in colleagues
• Don’t assume - the LGBTQI+ community is diverse, and stereotypical representations of q***r individuals portray only a small fraction of the wider community. Ensure you don’t assume a patients’ gender or sexuality. Ask about preferred pronouns and the gender (M/F, trans or gender diverse) of any partners when discussing relevant sexual history.

The abundance of research related to the microbiome and health is staggering. I literally cannot read articles quickly enough! 📚🤯

Also hard to ignore is the obvious relationship between the Mediterranean diet and longevity, while the standard American diet is consistently associated with an increased risk of every single chronic disease... 🍔🍟🥞🌭🌽🥤🍩

Whoa... if you think about it.. heart disease and type 2 diabetes are truly epidemics of ‘food borne’ illness.🫀🤔💭

A recent study found that older adults adopting a Mediterranean diet for one year had positive changes in the diversity of their gut microbiome 🌈 significant improvements in their cognitive function 🧠 and wayyy less INFLAMMATION 🔥🚒 🚒

Guess what heart disease, cancer, diabetes, dementia, arthritis and autoimmune disease all have in common: INFLAMMATION 🔥🔥🔥

And guess what an imbalanced microbiome and messed up gut leads to?! (Hint: 🔥🔥🔥)

I think you get the point. Your microbiome is a big deal. Feed it wisely and it will take care of you.
