Let me guess: you’re feeling overworked, not getting enough sleep and your memory is garbage? An afternoon nap could be the ticket to better performance and productivity - not to mention healthier aging.

Although frowned upon in Americanized countries with their puritanical work ethic that glorifies overwork and sleep deprivation, afternoon naps are a celebrated daily ritual in other parts of the world.

Spain and Italy take their afternoon Siesta 🇪🇸 or Riposo 🇮🇹 very seriously. Businesses close for a couple hours in the afternoon so workers can go home to eat lunch and take a quick snooze before returning to work. It sounds like a dream. Perhaps it’s no surprise that scientists have linked napping to better health.

According to the literature, “midday napping in the form of a siesta is associated with a number of health benefits. Napping in general can improve alertness and cognitive performance and it may also improve long-term health. Mediterranean adults who regularly take a siesta have a lower risk of mortality from heart disease.” (https://www.sleep.org/napping-around-the-world)

A 2020 review of studies on napping found that “short-term daytime sleep for up to 30 minutes between 1 p.m and 3 p.m can be recommended to improve the effectiveness of intellectual work.” In particular, declarative memory improves. (PMID: 32929935) That’s remembering words/names/numbers/facts/places - which is important for students and workers who have to stay sharp and think on their feet.

So what is the ideal length of time to nap? If you’re working and don’t want to hinder performance or productivity, cap your afternoon nap at 20-30 minutes to avoid sleep inertia, that foggy, disoriented feeling you get after napping too long. You don’t want to wake up at the office and forget what day it is or what you were doing 🤪

Naps that last less than 60 minutes are associated with healthier aging in older adults. Interestingly, napping for longer than 60 minutes per day was associated with poor aging and less social interaction (PMID: 31898552) which makes me suspicious about a correlation with loneliness or depression.

One of my favourite books, Rest, by Alex Pang, describes in detail the napping behaviour of many famously high achievers throughout history. Scientists, artists, musicians, athletes - people who produced far above average and contributed to humanity in ways that affect all of us to this day - despite taking time to nap. Perhaps they accomplished so much BECAUSE they took time to nap?

In our increasingly overworked, sleep deprived culture where chronic disease and burnout have reached unprecedented rates, maybe it’s time Canada sanctioned a siesta, eh! 🇨🇦

ASKING FOR A FRIEND 😆
…………………………………………………………………

You’ve heard it before: you should eat more vegetables. They prevent cancer and keep your heart healthy. But did you know they are vitally important to the health of your gut microbiome? 🦠

Feeding your microbiome is important business. The trillions of bacteria that call your gut home literally depend on you to feed them. And they like fibre, especially the kind from leafy green vegetables. 🥬

Your microbiome is waaaaay more important thank you might realize. In addition to helping you 💩 properly (which is important business too) it produces the neurotransmitters that elevate mood, influence mental health and behaviour, even appetite and how much you eat! If gut bacteria are out of balance (what we call DYSBIOSIS) it sends stress signals to your brain that make you feel anxious and depressed. Your microbiome interacts with your immune system in ways that either keep you well or trigger inflammation and autoimmune disease. Scientists are discovering that the microbiome even plays a role in some cancers. 🧠

If you’re not in the biz, nutrition can seem super complicated. So many wacky diets and food rules, often contradicting each other, influencers and celebrities with airbrushed abs peddling detox teas and expensive supplements. There is a lot of noise and the loudest voices don’t necessarily know wtf they are talking about. 🙃

When in doubt, eat a carrot. Or some radishes. Or a handful of sugar snap peas. Toss a salad. Steam some broccoli. Sauté some bok choy. Grill some peppers. Roast some sweet potatoes. Wilt some spinach. Drizzle olive oil on all of it for extra health benefits. You get the idea. This is relatively easy s**t. You can totally do it.

And your microbiome will thank you.

It sure feels like summer in Collingwood! ☀️⛵️

While I love all the seasons, summertime is definitely my favourite - especially now that I have air conditioning at home. I love the heat, don’t get me wrong, but there are those days and weeks when you just need a break. To feel human. And to use your oven. And you guys know my hair..🙄

While wrapping up another full week @bewellcollingwood which included hosting some very bright naturopathic medical students from @myccnm (virtually of course) I noticed that I am booking new patients into November. Holy shiitake!!!

If you’re an existing patient, please don’t panic. I reserve appointment times for you to ensure optimal continuity of care. There are a couple spots left in July, and August is filling up rather quickly. If you want to connect this summer give us a call ASAP.

If you’ve been thinking about working with me, I have a wait list that is being updated daily. Cancellations happen. People get better and bail on me to go paddle-boarding or surfing 🏄🏻‍♀️ mountain biking 🚵🏿‍♀️ rock climbing 🧗🏽‍♀️ hiking 🥾 snorkelling 🤿 fishing 🎣 golfing ⛳️ or to play tennis 🎾 or chess♟ or to ride their horse 🐎 or to save the world 🚓🚑🚒🚜👩🏽‍🌾👨🏼‍🏫👩🏾‍🔬🦹🏼‍♀️ WHICH IS KIND OF THE WHOLE POINT:

Life’s too short to feel like 💩
You have lots of things to do!

Get on my wait list and hopefully the stars will align ⭐️
Otherwise I’ll see you at pumpkin spice/cashmere sweater time 🍂

I love pasta. And pizza. And good wine. And bubbles. Sometimes I even eat #sugar (gasp) ideally in the form of cupcakes (duh) 🧁

I make informed, healthy choices about what I eat (most of the time) in order to feel my best. And sometimes I eat whatever the heck I feel like, without guilt, shame or fear.

I have spent the last decade+ learning what to prioritize with my nutrition while helping my patients do the same. Here is what I focus on:

🧁 regulating blood sugar for mood, energy and hormonal health
🦠 keeping the microbiome balanced, diverse and nourished
💩 keeping BMs regular because you have to take out the trash
🙅‍♀️ keeping the gut barrier intact
🔥 in order to keep your immune system chill and self-tolerating
🚒 while actively fighting inflammation
🍒 and oxidative stress
🧠 to keep the brain sharp
🫀 and blood vessels supple
🫁 and lungs clear
🦵🏽and joints mobile
👄 and skin glowing
🦋 to prevent and treat chronic, degenerative diseases that have no business messing with your best life.

This strategy includes enjoying occasional treats. Because a healthy body can eat a little sugar and food colouring and live to tell the tale. 😁

Unless you are #celiac or have a severe reaction to #gluten, a little bit of wheat won’t likely derail your well-being.

Unless you’re in a #crohnsdisease or #ulcerativecolitis flare up, allergic or #lactoseintolerant a little dairy won’t turn your world upside down.

Unless you were recently diagnosed with #SIBO or in an #IBS flare, you need not fear foods high in #FODMAP (s)

And do you really need to buy EVERYTHING organic and non-GMO and #grassfed ... because, you know ... #glyphosate ??? ☠️🌾🌽 (actually, glyphosate IS a big problem and we should go there in another post..)

Rather than feeling guilty/ashamed/fearful about food choices, let’s get educated and make informed decisions, prioritizing and supporting the needs of the individual.

And sometimes, let’s break all the rules! 😈
