Breaking Down Barriers Independent Living Resource Centre Breaking Down Barriers empowers people with disabilities, enabling them to live independently in our communities of South Georgian Bay. Since 1985, Breaking Down Barriers has been providing programs and services that enable individuals with disabilities to participate in all aspects of society.

Our programs and services support people to:

Reach their personal goals

Acquire appropriate disability supports, assistive devices and technology

Seek employment or volunteer opportunities

Connect with peers, problem solve and build self-confidence

Overcome isolation and segregation

Access community programs and supports

Reduce barriers in communities


Breaking Down Barriers provides over 4,200 hours of service to 210 individuals with live in the Georgian Triangle per year. Our work is supported by 65 volunteers who contribute more than 1,800 hours of their time each time. Fundraising events and campaigns such as Through Other Eyes and Rockin the House Bonspiel raise approximately $30,000 per year. Our commitment to excellence has resulted in accreditation by Independent Living Canada, our national umbrella organization.
