As the season winds down here on the farm, we are looking for new flocks for a few of our silkies. These birds come from Prince Edward Island so they offer genetic diversity to any local flock they join.

Autumn, the season of letting go. 🍂

The trees are surrendering their leaves to the wind, the garden has gone to sleep, and the meadows have traded their summer greens for shades of gold.

There is beauty in knowing when to let go. Perhaps the secret lies in learning not to hold on so tightly to the things that were never meant to stay.

Usnea — Old Man’s Beard 🌿

Hanging from the branches of our boreal trees, Usnea is one of the many treasures growing in our forests.

Although often mistaken for moss, Usnea is actually a lichen, and it has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine.

For centuries, Usnea has been valued by herbalists for its believed antibacterial and antifungal properties. Traditionally, it has been used for respiratory complaints, sore throats, skin infections, and wound care.

We are surrounded by nature’s medicines, and generations of knowledge just waiting to be rediscovered.

Where through the endless boreal forest, golden birches shine like constellations scattered across a darkened sky of spruce and fir.

Where the meadows have turned gold as we come into the peak days of autumn’s colours. For at the signal of the slower-rising sun, she is beginning to prepare herself for rest, knowing winter will soon arrive.

It is a season of preparation, but also one that asks us to stop for a moment and stand in awe of the beauty she brings with her.
