Are alcohol hand sanitisers effective against COVID-19 and PATHOGENS?

A recent review1 of the effectiveness of a range of hand sanitizers with varying alcohol concentrations as well as those which are alcohol-free indicated that a minimum contact time of 30 seconds was required to inactivate a range of enveloped viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 and reduce the number of viable viruses by between 3 and 5-logs but that a contact time of one minute resulted in greater efficacy. Alcohol hand sanitizers have recently been shown to have a very short duration of action and, therefore, protection against re-contamination.1 Moreover, alcohol hand sanitizers can cause a number of unwanted side effects such as skin dehydration, contact dermatitis and skin cracking. In fact, a number of studies looking at the effectiveness of alcohol-based hand sanitizers on the removal of Noroviruses indicate exactly the opposite and that use of alcohol-based sanitizers actually increases the risk of Norovirus outbreaks.8,9

I thought I would share a post from Professor Curran. Yes, we want to stop talking about COVID but the reality is it isn't going away unless we stay proactive. Canada is in the same predicament as the US and the rest of the world.

It has been a few months since I last posted on LinkedIn. We had a somewhat of a break in hospitalizations and a general feeling that the pandemic was done. It was a nice feeling, but in fairness I warned that we would be back into August before we would start seeing surges again. As you can see from the CNN article today, BA.5 variant is rapidly spreading. Mask mandates are not back yet, but they will have to be adopted again. We are now seeing a variant that is sneaking past our best defenses, and with fall coming we can expect a big change again, back to being more cautious. The last few months should have allowed everyone to put into place preventative measures, and if not, we are going to see a panic reaction again. Everyone knows now the virus is airborne, we know air filtration is necessary indoors, we know the greatest threat for us is indoors. If you’re using Facebook at your desk right now, we have a question. When was the last time you cleaned your keyboard?

Hint: If it’s been a while, it’s time.

Here’s how.

First, switch off your machine and unplug everything.

Second, grab some Cotton Balls, Cotton Buds or Q Tips and some isopropyl alcohol (purchased at pharmacies). Dab a small amount of alcohol on the cotton ball and use this to clean each key. Clean between each key with a Cotton Bud dipped in a small bit of alcohol. You don’t want the keyboard to get wet inside, so don’t be heavy-handed.

Severe Covid-19 Doubles Risk Of Death In The Year After Illness, Study Finds

In 2020 around 356,000 people died in the US from Covid-19 while in 2021, the year the US launched major vaccine programs across the country, around 450,000 have died from Covid-19. Delta is essentially responsible for around 200,000 deaths in the US since it became a dominant strain in June and we have about 40,000 deaths a month in October and November. We are yet again seeing a rise in cases in November with 2,600,000 cases recorded in the US alone, and this has nothing to do with latest variant Omicron. This is a pandemic of the unvaccinated, and unfortunately that also includes our kids in schools. But now, a study has been published in ‘Frontiers in Medicine’ and reported on by Forbes which suggests ‘Survivors of severe Covid-19 are more than twice as likely to die over the following year than those who experienced milder symptoms or remained uninfected that even those who recover from severe Covid-19’, written by staff writer Robert Hart of Forbes. So, firstly it’s critical that people get vaccinated, secondly mask wearing is not difficult but necessary, using ‘Capture Coating’ to clean the air is a cheap and easy solution to removing the threat of the spread of SARS-CoV-2 indoors.
