That glowing yin-yang was reconstructed from measurements of entangled photons. Researchers deliberately wrote the pattern into laser light, then recovered it through measurements of the photon pairs.
The University of Ottawa and Sapienza University of Rome team called their technique biphoton digital holography. Published in Nature Photonics in 2023, their work offered a much faster way to reconstruct the photons’ shared quantum state.
With entanglement, the pair holds information that describing either photon on its own leaves out. Their relationship is part of what scientists can measure.

John White, Spooky2’s developer, explains Remote through quantum entanglement and the antenna properties of DNA. In his explanation, a sample retains a connection with its owner, allowing frequency information applied to that sample to be reflected in the body.
The experiment in this article measured photons. With Remote, I want to understand what measurements could tell us about the connection John describes between a sample and its owner. Seeing this research makes me want to open the paper, follow the measurements, and keep searching.

Researchers at the University of Ottawa and Sapienza University of Rome have captured the quantum wavefunction of two entangled photons in real time using a breakthrough imaging technique called biphoton digital holography.
The resulting image resembles a glowing yin-yang, as you see in the image with this post. The image is built from real experimental data collected by an ultra-high-precision camera capable of mapping the quantum state of an entangled pair as it evolves.
For nearly a century, quantum entanglement existed primarily as a mathematical description. This new method offers an unprecedented way to visualize and study the relationship between particles that behave as a single system, even when separated by distance.
Published in Nature Photonics, the research could dramatically speed up future quantum measurements and help advance quantum computing, communication, and sensing technologies.
