One Million Cats are affected by the lesser known cat meat trade in Vietnam every year. Read more about it through the link below.

We are proud of our committee member, Dr Katherine Polak, for her continuous work to end the suffering.

While it's easy to look the other way or pretend it isn't happening, the reality is that over one million cats are stolen, traded and killed for the cat meat trade in Vietnam ๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ณ every year. Today is the launch of our Cat Meat Trade campaign to put an end to the suffering. After sitting on this footage far too long, it feels so good to finally get it out into the world, and work towards ending the trade. Please join us to stand up for cats. ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ณโœŠ

For more information, please see our newly launched report, the first of its kind to detail the inner workings of the cat meat trade: https://bit.ly/CatMeatReport

Those of us who work with companion animals will be all too aware of zoonotic diseases. These are diseases that are passed between animals and people, including rabies. Animal welfare advice in times of Covid. Stay safe everyone!

During this COVID-19 pandemic, many countries have gone into lockdown and there are restrictions on businesses or services, which can include the services of many animal welfare organisations. The lockdown also affects pet owners, as they are often limited in the care and exercise they can provide for their animals. The WSAVA Animal Wellness and Welfare Committee has provided some advice for pet owners, organisations and governments in the these three documents:

Today is World Veterinary Day!

On World Veterinary Day, WSAVA and World Animal Protection International salute the thousands of veterinarians and veterinary team members who are supporting efforts to curtail the COVID-19 pandemic and to protect human and animal health and welfare in their regions. Many are contributing equipment or their own services to help their human medical colleagues and public health counterparts. Many more are working tirelessly to support pet owners and their communities with evidenced-based information and advice. We thank them wholeheartedly for their dedication, commitment and compassion. This truly is One Health in action. Thank you for all you do.

10/01/2019

On 18-21 October, The third global conference on humane dog population management was held in Mombasa, Kenya, attended by around 200 participants from around the world.

AWWC members Drs. Natasha Lee and Katherine Polak delivered a workshop on Shelter Medicine to approximately 30 participants. They learned about best practices pertaining to shelter medicine, animal welfare, and community engagement, were introduced to shelter medicine principles including capacity for care, preventive health protocols, and shelter metrics, and were inspired to meet and exceed minimum welfare and medical standards.

Shelter medicine is an exciting, growing field of veterinary medicine dedicated to the care and needs of underserved animals. This field combines individual animal health care with the needs of the larger population, with the primary goal of preventing disease rather than just treating it. Shelter medicine must therefore balance the physical and behavioral needs of individual animals with the overall health of the herd without jeopardizing the welfare of either one, while also promoting public health and shelter lifesaving.

The Community Veterinary Outreach (CVO), in partnership with WSAVA and CVMA, conducted an outreach day just before the WSAVA Congress in Toronto. Around 30 delegates listened to presentations, joined discussions and participated in a CVO One Health clinic. The One Health clinic provided veterinary care for homeless and vulnerably-housed pet owners, alongside human health services such as oral care and smoking reduction/cessation.
