Sometimes herbal medicine is messy. I love it. Today I’m processing Spanish Needle (Bidens frondosa) into a fresh plant tincture. The Bidens Family are strong broad spectrum antibacterials, but only if tinctures fresh. #herbs #herbalmedicine #plants #medicine #wildcrafting #foraging #gardening

Beautiful Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa). I tried for 3 years to grow this from seed with no luck. Last year I found some seedlings at Kayanase greenhouse on Six Nations and planted them at the garden. This spring, I waited and waited and nothing came up. I lost hope. Then, all of a sudden they appeared, looking strong and healthy. Such a beautiful flower and great medicine! #herbs #herbalmedicine #plants #medicine #growing #gardening #foraging #wildcrafting

When you’re drying roots or fruits and you have too much to fit in a dehydrator, spread them out on baking sheets (pizza trays are best because they have holes in them) and put them in the oven. Turning the oven on will create way too much heat, but if you simply close the door and turn the interior light on, it will create enough warmth to dry out your herbs quickly without harming them. #herbs #herbalmedicine #plants #medicine #growing #foraging #wildcrafting #gardening

When you cut your thumb with the knife you just sharpened (way to go, Chris), it’s nice to have a patch of Yarrow nearby. I chewed a couple of leaves into a pulp and made what’s called a spit poultice. The bleeding stopped in just a couple of minutes. Thanks, Yarrow! #herbs #herbalmedicine #plants #herbalfirstaid #medicine #growing #gardening #forging #wildcrafting #medicine

This is what you get after just 2 years growing Poke Root (Phytolacca decandra). The pen is for scale. I dug this up to transplant it but was so surprised to see so much growth, decided it was time to make some medicine. This will be chopped, dried and then tinctured, and finally used as a powerful lymphatic stimulant. Be careful with this one. It is very powerful and needs to be used with caution. #herbs #herbalmedicine #gardening #medicine #wildcrafting #plants #lymphaticsystem

With all of the increased interest in improving immune system strength, my medicinal mushroom stores have really come in handy. Today, I’m making a tincture of Turkey Tail via the double extraction method. This means the mushrooms are first decocted (brought to a boil and then simmered for an hour or 2), then the appropriate amount of alcohol is added to the mushrooms and the broth, which then soaks for 4 weeks.
Turkey Tail, in addition to strengthening the immune system, also has antiviral, antibacterial, antioxidant and antitumor properties as well as supporting healthy kidney and liver function. If tinctures aren’t your thing, you can use the decoction as a tea or soup stock instead. #herbs #herbalmedicine #medicine #plants #wildcrafting #mushrooms #covid #immunesystem #immunesupport
