A big shout out for this week’s Friday Feature: Hamilton Community Foundation

A charitable organization founded in 1954. Their vision - a vibrant, diverse and inclusive Hamilton. Their mission - to drive positive change, by connecting diverse people, ideas and resources.

There are 191 community foundations in Canada, dedicated to improving communities in specific geographical areas. They do this by pooling the charitable gifts of donors to create endowment funds and using the investment income to make grants. Some community foundations support a town or a city, while others support an entire province.

Hamilton Community Foundation is a member of Community Foundations of Canada, the national membership organization for community foundations across Canada and is a “sector champion” member of Imagine Canada, a national program to promote public and corporate giving, volunteering and support to the community.

Our Friday Feature this week

United Way Halton and Hamilton (UWHH) make a measurable improvement on priority social issues in our community like food insecurity, mental health, and youth empowerment. By working with community partners to understand root causes, develop strategies to address them, bring together the right resources and measure our results, UWHH creates lasting change with and in the communities of Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Milton, and Halton Hills. UWHH fundraising and engagement efforts fund a network of 129 programs, which supports over 200,000 individuals in our communities.

Programs like Financial Empowerment and Problem Solving (hamiltontaxhelp.ca), which helps individuals facing barriers access tax filing to receive government benefits, and Ontario
211 (211ontario.ca/), a free phone line and website navigation service that connects individuals to local social services, is funded and supported by United Way Halton & Hamilton.

From shopping to an Employment Service that specializes in helping those with any kind of disability to navigate the world of employment.

Woolworth's on King St. just east of James St. in Hamilton, 1966 and 2020.

F. W. Woolworth Co. was founded in 1879 by Frank Winfield Woolworth in Utica, New York. His business was a retail company and one of the original pioneers of the five-and-dime stores.

Hamilton's Woolworth store originally opened in 1902, but was destroyed in a fire and was rebuilt in 1947 at 19-31 King St. E. The store had air conditioning and an 82-stool lunch counter. When it expanded in 1966 it was "the most modern and beautiful of the 278 Woolworth's stores in Canada." That Woolworth's would eventually close down in 1990. Today Kenzo Ramen and PATH Employment Services is located in the old Woolworth's building.

1966 photo is from The Hamilton Spectator.
2020 photo was taken by Time-Traveler Trevor Parkins-Sciberras.

Employment solutions for Hamiltonians.

PATH Employment Services has been around for 45 years, so we know a thing or 2 about how to find, get and keep jobs in Hamilton. Our dedicated staff work tirelessly on behalf of our clients to connect them with meaningful employment solutions. We’re not interested in temporary work that pays the bills today, we’d much rather connect people with the work they can feel good about and sustain for years to come. We’re vitally interested in assisting people with disabilities who may face barriers to finding employment and have carved out a full spectrum of services geared specifically towards this. We specialize in Disability awareness, accessibility, disability disclosure and advocacy for our clients. We look forward to working with and on behalf of all Hamiltonians.

This service is funded in part by the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario.
