Many things have changed, and Myosite Massage Therapy is changing too.
I have instituted many changes to my practice which are outlined below:

First off, it is going to look different when you arrive. We have rebuilt the front porch and stairs for your safety and allowed a larger top deck to help with physical distancing. (it is not quite finished but almost!)

I have reduced patient flow through the office and will no longer be using the front room as a waiting area. If you arrive early please have a seat outside on the porch or wait in your vehicle until your appointment time.

Infection Control: I have allowed for additional time in between patients to ensure proper disinfection. This includes wiping down the entire treatment room, common area door handles, any other contact surface. The bathroom is available for hand washing, however the toilet is for emergencies only.

Patient screening: All patients will answer a virtual COVID-19 screening questionnaire before their appointment. These questions will be reviewed prior to being admitted. I will not be seeing any patients who are unwell. Appointments will be rescheduled if patients or anyone in their household have been sick in the two weeks leading up to the appointment.

I will be following practitioner precautions. During your appointment, I will be wearing a face mask, face shield, and a gown. Frequent hand washing will occur. If I have any concerns regarding my health your appointment will be rescheduled.

Patient requirements: there will be a hand hygiene station at the front door, You will be required to use hand sanitizer before entry into the office. Patients and parents/guardians are required to wear a mask when entering the office as well.
I will kindly ask that if you have someone come with you to your appointment, arrange with them to wait in the vehicle. Please leave all unnecessary belongings at home or in the car. Everything else will be placed in a hamper.

Scheduling: Appointments will be managed to allow for physical distancing measures and disinfection protocol. As such, it will be important for all patients to arrive on-time. If you cannot attend your appointment for reasons other than health concerns, 48 hours notice is required or a missed appointment fee will be charged.

**Office hours are currently reduced. Massage treatment times will be in 30minute allotments only. I have to start with a clean slate, the way I booked clients before is not possible now. Therefore, all existing appointments made previous to COVID will be cancelled and have to be rescheduled. Please be patient while we get back in the groove and get used to the new way of doing things. Next week I will start taking high priority clients as well as contacting the people who were booked over the last 4 months to reschedule those appointments first.

I am always here for you if you have any questions or concerns and I am looking forward to seeing you in a safe manner!

One step in the right direction for getting back in business! #massagetable #newvinyl @ Myosite Massage Therapy

I know everyone is wondering what I'm doing to get ready. Lots!! I have received my first shipment of masks, disinfectant, a face shield, and lots of hand sanitizer! Vinyl pillow case covers and a new face cradle have been ordered. My table still needs to be recovered and have emailed for 2 quotes. I had to order new ink for the printer just to make the required signage and forms and have started printing off what I need, under the new guidelines. The rug under my table has been removed and relocated. And the best part, The front porch rebuild is underway !! It's all taking time, but I'm making progress!

This might help understand where we are at. It won't be business as usual for awhile.
When I do open it will be for those who cannot wait any longer (not just because you had massages regularly scheduled previously) I will only take a few people a day till I feel comfortable with what's going on with the curve.
I know all of you are waiting patiently, I am doing my best to make my home safe for my family and clients.

I copied this in a post on a FB group for RMTS. With permission he let me copy. There is still so much to do before returning to work is possible.

We can all agree that yesterdays release of “back to work” information was a mess, to say the least. However, that will be a whole other thread to talk about. Right now, we need to focus on the “how” we are to actually “open” our professions again.

It is definitely too early to jump the gun and actually start seeing patients. Anyone doing so today, May 28th, 2020, may not be fully ready for the fallout that seeing patients too early could create.

First, and foremost, ALL MTs need to do the IPAC modules. Second; Clinic spaces MUST be sanitized top-to-bottom to freshen the space. This would include running laundry again (linens sitting are no longer fresh). Clinic spaces should be audited: What can stay, what needs removed. Third: PPE must meet the CMTO, and MoH, minimum standards, plus be ordered/and available. More will still need to be considered.

Patients who are waiting, must be screened for “need” over “want”. The directive is clear:

Prioritize clients with essential care needs while gradually resuming practice. Massage Therapy treatment is considered essential when the client’s overall health or function would considerably decline if treatment were not provided (i.e. lead to hospitalization or other serious health consequences);

Very few patients across Ontario will fall into this guideline. Some clinics will have Zero patients who qualify as “essential care” cases (ie: can be self treated with stretches, hydrotherapy, etc…), and some clinics will have a majority of cases that meet the requirements (Possible examples: Catastrophic care under MVA, Acute MVA, Post-Surgical, Extreme PTSD, etc...). Many of our experts are believing that 95%, or more, of Ontario MT patients will possibly be disqualified from meeting this criterion. This, unfortunately does not match the tone of the Media Outlet releases. Thus, we need to be doing “damage control”.

This will bring us to our third thing to be doing, but should be done now. Sending emails/communications to patients. They need to be made aware that we are mandated to do pre-screening to determine who qualifies under our directive as “essential care” patients. We need to ask the questions to prove that A) They are at low risk for having COVID, and low risk for horrible consequences if they catch it and B) They meet the criterion set out by the CMTO for essential need of therapy to mitigate them requiring use of a hospital (ER), or mitigating “considerable decline” of health.

Some MT’s are in multi-disciplinary clinics. This presents a huge issue. 1- Other HCPs already believe they “know better than RMTs” what we are allowed to do. Thus, they want the RMTs to come back at full capacity….today. This is not right. They need to be informed that we are not ready to take full care-loads. We are not allowed to take full case loads by definition of “essential care” only. They need to know we are directed to GRADUALLY resume practice.

Gradually seems vague, to most. But what can we use to determine this transition? The Phases help us out here. Phase 1= Essential Care. This is where we are now. Phase 2 will loosen that restriction more, and then subsequently Phase 3 will loosen it more. Once Phase 3 has ended we MAY (it is not clear yet) be able to resume full, pre-COVID, practices.

In a multi-therapist setting I have already been advising that the therapists may consider designated days for opening. RMT1 on Monday, RMT2 on Tuesday, and so forth. This will reduce cross over encounters of patients with each other. It will limit Aerosols in the air being spread. It will allow one RMT to maintain sanitizing protocols at a better level. The list of benefits will go on.

There is still so much that needs to be considered. So I implore all RMTs to take a step back, breath, and figure this all out. I, for one, am setting Monday, June 1st, as my possible day to start pre-screening. By then I might have a script ready that has all the accurate information represented.

I am not rushing to my clinic space today.

When it was announced yesterday that RMTs can gradually return to practice if allowed by their governing bodies, it resulted in the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario website to crash as all the RMTs rushed to learn the guidelines.
The restrictions are severe and new protocols incredibly extensive. It will take some time to put all of them in place.
At this time we can only treat "essential" clients and the definition of that is below. (And that is if your clinic space meets the new requirements). The majority of practices won't have many or any clients that qualify. I'm not sure I've prevented a hospital visit in my 21 years of being an RMT.

Yesterday afternoon I was blindsided by a text from a client saying I was back to work. What ? I looked into what information was released. I just want to clarify that I am not back to work yet, what I am allowed is to take emergencies. (When avoiding a trip to the ER and I'm your last option scenario).
I know everyone got their hopes up but please be patient, it will still take time before massage treatments gradually start up again.
