These amazing people are the @eorla_alreo Regional Virology Lab at @cheohospital and our September #LaboftheMonth! Their manager Marie-France Jemus says: “We are currently (and for the past decade) are working with a shortage of Medical Laboratory Technologists but, thankfully, our laboratory technicians are coming in to the rescue! COVID-19 testing is a very manual technique and our Virology lab is growing by 2-3 techs weekly. Pre-COVID Virology had 6 MLT and 1 LT3 (MLA). Currently we are growing to 9 MLT and 30 LT3’s to get to 3000 tests per day. We anticipate to expand to 27 MLT and 65 LT3 to reach our fall target of 6000 test per day by mid-November!” Stay tuned for more posts soon and their interview with our CEO Michelle Hoad. Apply with your lab to be our October feature!

👏👏👏👏

Our laboratory staff technologists, technicians, pathologists, scientists and clerical support staff have been working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their hard work and dedication have helped reduce the time it takes for the public to get test results, which allows for faster contact tracing with public health, reducing the chance of exposure and spread in our communities.

Our lab is now performing about 1,000 COVID-19 tests per day and we have tested more than 85,000 COVID-19 samples from 12 hospitals, six COVID-19 testing centres and eight long term care homes from communities across Northeastern Ontario including Wawa, Sault Ste Marie, Chapleau, Blind River, Elliot Lake, North Bay, Mattawa and Temiskaming.

Did you know that most overdoses are tested through the lab? Aug. 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day. In Canada, 15,393 apparent opioid-related deaths occurred from 2016 - 2019. We can all train to recognize and act if we see someone overdosing, and change how we speak about substance use to #EndStigma so people can access the services they need. #IOAD2020 #OverdoseAware #EndOverdose

Media Statement from CEO Michelle Hoad sounding the alarm back in July about #wave2plusflu and our lack of people and instrumentation - it's getting more pressing each week!
#wave2plusflu #labvocate #MLPAOnews #MLTshortageON #medlabon

Media Statement from our CEO Michelle Hoad today: "There is a distinct possibility [PCR Instrumentation] breakdown will coincide with flu season and a potential second wave of COVID-19.

This would align with further staff loss due to stress and illness from already understaffed teams experiencing burnout. Ontario is currently lacking both people and instrumentation to handle Wave 2 + Flu. Labs need immediate intervention to avert lengthy testing delays and ensure urgent patient care for all Ontarians.”

Anyone else a mobile lab technician that has not got pandemic pay? Back on May 12th the MLPAO sent out an email saying that lab technicians that are mobile, working at long-term care homes are eligible for the pandemic pay, but the government has not followed through with this as of yet 😠

As a lab technician we are working 24/7 to reach the goal of testing.
This is the email I received today from Premier Ford. If anyone wants to join me in submitting "feedback" to his contact us page, please feel free! Thank you for writing to me about temporary pandemic pay. I appreciate hearing your views and concerns. Temporary pandemic pay measures build on steps our government has already taken to support frontline workers, including providing free emergency child care and securing necessary medical equipment and supplies. We remain committed to using every resource we have to support frontline workers as we work to stop the spread of COVID-19. We are grateful for the tireless work of our frontline health care workers and all essential workers and will continue to stand behind them as we respond collectively to the COVID-19 outbreak. The Government of Ontario would like to hear your feedback and concerns. To make an inquiry, or for more information, including frequently asked questions, please visit http://ontario.ca/pandemicpay and visit the contact us page to submit your feedback. These are the parameters we are implementing at this time. Thanks again for contacting me. Doug Ford Premier of Ontario
