McMaster Global Medical Brigades

McMaster Global Medical Brigades McMaster Global Medical Brigades is a chapter of the international organization, Global Brigades, the world’s largest not-for-profit student-led global health and sustainable development organization. Since 2004, Global Brigades has mobilized over 12,000 university students and professionals over 273 chapters around the world through nine skill-based service programs to improve quality of life in under resourced communities. McMaster Global Medical Brigade is proud to be the 4th GMB chapter in Canada! Last year for the 2011-2012 school year, the MGMB team worked on and successfully completed our first medical volunteer trip to Panama for 10 days where we volunteered in the rural Darien Province. It was an amazing experience for all volunteers involved. This year, the MGMB team is once again ready to start planning for our 2013 trip and are looking for your help!

Medical and Dental Brigade volunteers have the opportunity to shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, assist dentists in fillings and extractions, and work in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner community receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are treated and volunteers deliver public health workshops to educate patients in hygiene and preventative healthcare. Between brigades our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends. Honduras and Panama are the current focus of Medical Brigades, where more than 3,000 annual student volunteers and health professionals travel to establish mobile clinics in under resourced communities. Communities are selected on an extensive study based on need, access to medicine and include a collection of information to create baseline demographic information. Important Statistics about our Community Partners: • Typically no doctors within a 20 mile radius • Average family income is less than $1 a day • 20% of patients have never seen a doctor outside of GB • Typical families have less than 3 gallons of water per day to use

Mission: Global Medical Brigades provides a holistic model for sustainable health care in under-served rural communities by conducting preliminary needs assessments, treating patients to the highest ethical standards, sponsoring referrals to those with needs beyond our capability, recording data for the production of quantitative reports, and working with other GB programs to improve the water, sanitation, and economic infrastructures. We are proud to become an official partner to the ODSP sign up clinics. The monthly clinics are designed to ease the burden of applying for the Ontario Disability Support Program by providing all the necessary medical and social services supports to complete the onerous application in one afternoon. The clinics are dedicated to providing care and support to people with no family doctor who are homeless or precariously housed in Hamilton. We are pleased to join the Shelter Health Network, the Campaign for Adequate Welfare and Disability Benefits, The Hamilton Community Legal Clinic and the Hamilton Social Medicine Response Team in sponsoring this important initiative.
