With the closure of Giorgio’s No Frills in April of 2016, access to full-service grocery stores (also known as supermarkets and superstores) have become a concern for the residents of the Crown Point neighbourhood in East Hamilton. Due to the rise of these concerns, this video will present determinants to guide the neighbourhood partners towards identifying what a food desert is as well as parallel and contrast the identified determinants of food deserts with the conditions that exist in Crown Point. This will be done from a ground-zero approach, analyzing the factors present in the neighbourhood itself and applying the determinants identified in a community-engaged perspective versus an academic perspective. The conclusions outlined will work together to aide neighbourhood representatives in determining the strategy they wish to devise with and for the Crown Point community.
