EIMC McMaster

EIMC McMaster We at EIMCMcMaster represent the graduate and medical student body at McMaster University in Hamilton looking to spread awareness of the use of exercise as a therapy for chronic diseases.

Let's get active! Exercise is Medicine Canada @ McMaster University is a joint initiative between the graduate departments of Kinesiology, Biomedical Sciences and Faculty of Medicine. As one of three university chapters partnered with the national Exercise is Medicine Canada initiative, our main directives are to 1) promote a healthy lifestyle amongst McMaster students, staff and faculty and 2) promote the application of exercise as a therapeutic option for health professionals. Our first goal will be accomplished through a combination of seminars, conferences, presentations and interactive events, bringing health research conducted at McMaster and across Canada into perspective for the community. [email protected] will also encourage the community to become active through such initiatives as recreational running races, team-based fitness initiatives and intramural sports teams. Our second directive will impact McMaster affiliated health professionals, both established and in training, providing them with the tools to implement physical activity recommendations into their health care practices. Fostering collaborative relationships between health care providers and researchers will be an integral step in promoting the application of exercise prescription. Inter-professional education events through the Program for Inter-Professional Practice, Education and Research at McMaster will serve as a venue for our group to engage with medical professionals delivering fundamental knowledge, resources and skills in an interactive format. The end product of our initiative will be a McMaster community well educated in the multitude of benefits resulting from increased physical activity, as well as optimal practices, resources and motivation to accomplish these goals.

Mission: Educate students, staff, faculty and McMaster health care professionals on the therapeutic benefits of a healthy lifestyle involving exercise

Fit middle-aged men 'at lower risk for some cancers'

One of the next challenges in exercise physiology is linking fitness and exercise to cancer prevention and remission. This study found that in fitter men, the risks of developing certain types of cancer dropped. Now, we don't know whether this might be from overall healthier lifestyles, or the effect of exercise itself, but it's a step in the right direction!

Very fit men in their late 40s are less likely to get lung cancer and colorectal cancer than unfit men, a study in JAMA Oncology suggests.
