Mind. Body. Soul. Always. As the mother of a busy 5 year old, I appreciate first hand that balance can sometimes be difficult to maintain in our lives. And just when you think things can’t get any crazier we’re thrown a curve ball. My curve ball was a cancer diagnosis and all the learning that it brought. While one of my greater goals is to help you to achieve a healthy, peaceful balance by providing you the space to pause and reconnect, I also bring training and personal experience to those whose lives have been touched by cancer. Massage therapy can have a very positive impact on those affected, such as: improving the quality of sleep, increasing relaxation, relieving fatigue, pain, anxiety and nausea. In resolving post-surgery, edema (swelling) or preventing it in cases where lymph nodes have been removed, I use manual lymph drainage, a gentle technique to help carry the waste products away from the tissues and back toward the heart, encouraging the body’s natural drainage. In general, I encourage my clients to be actively involved in building and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I am passionate about helping individuals living with stress, anxiety and depression. My treatments include educating my clients in postural awareness and stress reduction techniques. I understand the strong connection between the mind and the body, and their impact on each other and health in general. My current experience includes advanced techniques such as: trigger point therapy, myofascial release, joint mobilization, manual lymph drainage and muscle energy techniques. I am also a committed lifelong learner, continuously enhancing my skill base through advanced and specialized training. I am an honours grad of the Mohawk College Massage Therapy Advanced Diploma Program, and licensed by the College of Massage Therapy of Ontario. I strive to live a healthy balanced lifestyle, and enjoy spending my free time with family and friends. I also enjoy that oh-so-important “me time”, going for a run (sometimes with a jogging stroller), fitting in a yoga class, playing the piano or reading a good book. I consider it a great privilege to work with my clients in the field of massage therapy. Rebecca DeRoo, RMT

SLEEP! Do you have a sleep routine? We “know” that we shouldn’t spend time in front of a screen, but how often do you create and stick to your sleep routine?

Taking time at the end of your day to unwind and decompress can set you up for a delicious night’s sleep! Here are a few tips:

🌙 Leave work at work. Stop checking emails. Set healthy boundaries.

🌙 Have soft white noise like a fan, or soft music playing when you sleep. There are great sound machines on Amazon, and some great phone apps!

🌙 Leave your phone alone. Tough - but doable.

🌙Sip calming tea. Chamomile, lavender, or lemon balm are all yummy teas that will help your mind and body settle

🌙Tune into your nervous system. Take 15 deep diaphragmatic breaths. In through your nose, and out through your mouth. Purse your lips to extend your breathe. This will turn down your fight or flight response allowing your parasympathetic nervous system to kick in- think, “Rest and digest” ✨

Sweet dreams 😴 ☺️😘

Lots of requests for this yummy soup! And soooo warming and nice to have on a cold day! 🍜

PLUS miso soup contains (surprise) miso – which is a fermented condiment, which makes it easier on the body to digest and contains probiotics. Great for gut and immune health!

I added some more vegetables than one would traditionally see in a miso soup (and I challenge and welcome you to do the same – this is the perfect time to use up that bag of frozen vegetables sitting in the freezer, or those broccoli stalks that you should NEVER throw out!)

Ingredients:
3-4 tbsp miso paste
4 cups broth (bone, veggie, chicken, beef, etc)
2 broccoli stalks – chopped thinly
1 onion - chopped
2 handfuls spinach – torn up
¼ cup chopped green onion
2 sheets nori
1 block silken tofu, diced
Coconut oil

Directions:
Sautee broccoli and onion in coconut oil until translucent. Add broth.

Dissolve miso paste in small amount of water so it doesn’t clump

Add to broth, add green onions, diced tofu.

Simmer for 7 minutes

Enjoy!

Mmmmm

01/12/2021

As promised: one of my favourite treatment options. It is unfortunatly underused because it is sticky, and requires a bit of effort to start. But then it’s alllll about relaxation. And you can utilize it while you’re binging Netflix! 📺

(Yes, we’re all there. Lockdown on, show on, treatment on)

So what is it? I'm talking about castor oil! 🌱

Castor oil wonderful You’ve probably heard of it either for labour induction (not pretty) or as a beauty option (long lashes, hair treatments)

I do NOT recommend taking it internally, ever, unless you want to have a bad time on the toilet.
However, topically ...

Castor oil has as been shown to increase circulation and promote elimination and healing to tissues and organs underneath the skin. It is particularly effective in being absorbed into lymph circulation which can improve digestion!

Recommended for:
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD)
- Constipation
- Gastritis
++

Castor oil is useful in the treatment of sprains, strains, and injuries:
- Reduces inflammation and edema
- Stimulates the lymphatic system
- Reduces the sensation of pain by decreasing substance P, a nervous system neurotransmitter.

It has also been specifically used in cases of menstrual irregularities, and ovarian cysts and fibroids ❣️

How do you use this seemingly magic oil?

In order for it to penetrate deeply, it needs pressure. The best way to apply the oil is by soaking it in a piece of organic flannel, applying it to the targeted area (liver, abdomen, knees, etc), using a hot water bottle to aid in circulation and to apply that mechanical pressure

It is STICKY so make sure you’re wearing something you don’t care about.

And as always – before starting any treatment, check in with your healthcare provider first.

*** AVOID THIS IN PREGNANCY, and you want to make sure you’re being assessed before jumping to any conclusions. Always ask WHY before asking WHAT!

It’s been a busy start to January! So happy that people are taking the time to address their concerns. This is just a small collection of what was treated this week in clinic.

If you’re suffering from any of these, or something else entirely, and you’re ready to address it, reach out to your friendly naturopathic doctor

I’ll share one my favourite treatment options later next week, that I often recommend for all of the above. Can you guess what it is? (Yes… acupuncture, of course – but this time it’s something different) )

How does this photo make you feel? A fun night out? Does it make you feel positive, or negative? Maybe you want a burger now? Go for it! No food should be off-limits. 🥨🍟 Our society has curated an unhealthy relationship with food for many of us. Fashion, the nature of our society’s competitive standards, or control...so many factors.🙈

January often encourages us take a look at our eating habits, fitness level and how our clothes are fitting. It can come with some tough moments and negative self talk. If you’ve been there ... which undoubtedly all of us have - remember that we’re all just mammals on the food chain doing this thing called life. Don’t take it too seriously ♥️

👉🏻Dr. Lydia Kovacs completed her undergraduate degree in applied food and nutrition and is a whiz in the kitchen - if you’d like to evaluate and focus on your specific nutrition goals for your body based on your lifestyle - she’s your girl! Naturopathic appointments are covered by most extended health plans and we direct bill for you.

👉🏻If you’d like to dive a little deeper, Social Worker/Psychotherapist Stacey Fernandes will help you identify and work through your thoughts associated with food to identify how it’s been serving you, to slowly shift into looking at the ways in which it’s no longer serving you ♥️

Virtual and in-person appointments are available for both of these services at OM

January 2021 is going to be fantastic ✨ Let’s do life together 🙌🏻

01/06/2021

Gotcha !

I dislike the idea that comes to mind when one thinks “detox” – aimed at improving health, they often involve deprivation, lack in nutrients, often involve laxatives which can disrupt our gut flora and cause reliance.

The focus is also often centered around weight loss – which, yes, often occurs – but this restriction can lead to disordered eating, unrealistic expectations, and rebound weight gain.

Not to mention other possible risks: dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, impaired bowel function

These are all too harsh – and often people who seek them out are already in a weakened state of health. Depriving your body of essential nutrients and disrupting digestive function will make things worse, not better.

Now, that’s not to say that the idea of detoxing is all bad. Our body is built to detox. And does so on a daily basis. Our skin, lungs, immune system, intestines, kidney, and liver, work to protect, metabolize, neutralize, filter and eliminate harmful substances. Our body is designed to defend itself from environmental insults and occasional excesses.

Of course, this system can get out of wack – for instance: if we’re not having regular bowel movements, our means of elimination are not ideal. But I do NOT recommend starting an intense laxative detox or juice fast as a treatment option for this.

If you want to support your body and support your natural methods of detoxing – yes, go for it. That’s part of a healthy lifestyle! I'll post my recommendations shortly.

But if you're looking for a quick fix... There is none. I'm sorry, but a 10 day juice fast won't cut it. Your body takes on a lot, and it can take a long time for symptoms to develop or to get bad enough to finally warrant your attention. And sometimes it can take a longer than you want to get back to being you. But that doesn't mean it's impossible! Not at all! But it does require patience and celebration of each step forward. And a proper investigation into WHAT is going on.

You can do it. I believe in you ❤️

01/04/2021

Hey, it’s Lydia! Wow, I indulged over the holidays. I was lucky to get to see my family virtually– so grateful to have their company, as well as partaking in the annual cheesefest, and eating as many gingerbread, shortbread, and marzipan cookies as my stomach can handle (and then some). And did I mention the beer and wine?

So yes, my body is feeling it. But I’m not talking about my weight. Too much about the new year is about dieting, about body image. Which is completely fair, and is something I’ve been drawn to countless Januarys. It’s everywhere, its normalized: you’re motivated and inspired and ready to feel better. But let’s switch the focus to that: the FEELING better.

All that sugar, gluten, dairy, and alcohol has affected the way I feel. I’ve been waking up groggy, with no energy. My body isn’t recovering from exercise as well. My digestion has slowed down, so I’m feeling constantly bloated… but also constantly wanting to snack.

Basically, I don't feel like myself. And I’ll admit – it’s not the easiest to get back on track. Sleeping in has been nice… and that chocolate is just so GOOD.

Does this sound at all familiar to you?
Whether you're feeling that holiday indulgence, or this is a long time struggle... Let's feel better

Support

Accountability

We make sure that the plan is sustainable and realistic, and that it changes as your health and as your goals change. And we celebrate! We celebrate how far you’ve already come, all the achievements you make, and each step you take.

It’s a new year! It’s a shift, a time of transition. If you’re feeling motivated, run with it! If you’re feeling stuck, let’s get you moving. Whatever you need, I’m here for you.

Melissa Lowler Osteopathic treatment was amazing. Her knowledge and skill and common sense language to help me understand how to maintain symmetry and balance for my twisted up core and hips was great. I highly recommend and am only sad my home back west doesn’t have such great supports like Melissa. 🙏
