When I came across this image, it really hit me.
Years ago, this is largely how I was trained to work. Stabilize. Reduce symptoms.
Make the client more “manageable.”
And I believed I was helping.
In many cases, medication can be lifesaving. It can create enough stability for someone to survive. That, I will never dismiss.
But what I did not yet understand was that symptoms are not the enemy. They are signals. They are protection. They are a nervous system doing its best to survive what it never safely processed.
When we focus only on managing symptoms, we may quiet them but we don’t always address why the alarm was ringing.
Over time, through my own healing and through listening deeply to the body, I began to understand something different.
Healing is not about making someone easier to manage.
It is about helping their nervous system feel safe enough to release what it has been holding.
That understanding changed everything for me, both professionally and personally.
I worked with the tools I was given. I cared deeply. I was doing the best I could at the time.
When we know better, we do better.
Medication has its place. Survival matters and so does stability.
And deeper healing, when someone is ready and supported, matters too.
Both can be true.
